Hey guys, My weekend was spoiled by a virus "thanks to my little brother's pen drive:(" Anyways, I had to install my Norton 2005 and update the virus definition list to date and perform a full scan but Norton really disappointed me when I had to install KasperSky Antivirus that caught 15 more viruses that Norton couldnt detect with its last updates:( Anyhow, I think I'm clean now "hopefully", however I think I have some damage left and I'd be thankful if you can help.. - Whenever I have to open a drive I get the open with list of applications and if I want it to just open, I have to browse for explorer.exe each time I double click on a drive from my computer, alternatively, I would type my drive letter followed by a colon in run. - I cant set the "Show hidden files and folders" and "Hide operation system files" options in folder options, "every time I change these options, they just set back automatically to dont show:(" Would it be helpful if I replaced the explorer/kernel files with a copy from a well functioning windows?? And if yes, can you please email those files to me on[

Hook up the infected drive as slave with a working installation as master. This way you don't run the risk of infecting your backup media with whatever is left over. Roswell

It's not really killing you. It hasn't taken out a contract on you and your family has it? It would be a disturbing trend if it did.

Fair point if the virus is still there, however I was taking his statement that the virus was gone as the truth...

hang on, wasn't there a springer show once where they had a disgruntled computer tried to off its owner because he was cheating on it with the neighbor's "sexy and sleek" Laptop? :-D (I can picture Jerry Springer reading this post and going D'OH!!! Why didn't I think of that?!)

I guess you can't use System Restore to go back to an earlier time?...even if you didn't manually make any backups, XP makes them...just pick an earlier date on the calendar before your troubles? Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Restore...be warned though, you might have backed up the virus as well...go wayyy back. I use Avira Anti-Vir Personal Classic for anti-virus...it catches a great deal of stuff and it's free for home use...www.avira.com. Don't use the more commercial anti-virus...they spend all their money on advertising and none on improving their products.

Survival of the bully, starving all competing viruses. Then, simply uninstall Norton. At least, that's the theory.

Should I be?? I dont see what's your point, if you're talking about the size, their sizes together without zipping will add up to less than 1MB. And if you're not aware about windows structure let me tell you that you can replace them easily when damaged and that's exactly what I've done just now to be able to write this message, other than that, excuse my novice experience.

Good! I was advised to use it just this week as my office just got it. I think I should give it a try soon. Thanks again dear norm:)

                                      See this path

                                      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL

and in this path set CheckedValue to 1 now you must see hidden files and folders
