I would say, go with your budget. If you have the dough to drop on a PS3, do it. There are some games on PS3 I want to play, but my wallet laughs at me. :(( -Keith

(had it for less then a week) and am thoroughly happy with it. The Wi-Fi support is neat, as is being able to download and play demo games.

My post got swallowed. :doh: Here's a "quick" synopsis: Wii * Wider family friendly selection * Classic NES, SNES, N64 TurboGraphix 16 games on Virtual Console * Motion controls * Backwards compatable with GameCube games and peripherals (except GameBoy Adapter) * Doesn't support HDTV (pro or con, depending on your setup) * Doesn't play movies (that I know of) * No internal hard drive -- must use SD card to store settings, game saves, and Virtual Console games * Rumble controllers available (Wii-mote) * Online gaming not a priority with Nintendo PlayStation 3 * Less of a game selection for native games * 60gb and 80gb versions backwards compatable with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games * Gyroscopic sensor in controller for motion controls (not as involving as Wii) * Plays a plethera of media types, including DVD and Blu-Ray video * Upscales PlayStation/PlayStation 2 games and DVD movies to HD * Doesn't works as well with standard definition TVs (SDTV) * Can install Linux on internal drive to use as a computer * Can link to computer through network for media serving * Rumble controllers not available until 2008 * Online games are free to play (some MMORPGs will have subscription fees -- none so far) * Hard drive upgradeable using standard SATA 2.5" notebook drives PlayStation 2 * Large selection of native games with more still being made * Peripherals (memory cards, controllers, etc.) are still being manufactured * Lowest cost of getting started * Backwards compatable with PlayStation games * Works with SDTV and HDTV setups * Supported games use 480p and even 1080i for sharper image (using component cables) * Rumble controllers available * Most games are free to play online (that support online play) Personally, I own the PlayStation, the PlayStation 2 and the 60 gb PlayStation 3 (upgraded to a 120 gb hard drive). I wouldn't mind getting a Wii (personally I think some of the games sound like a blast to play). The gyroscopic motion controls on the PS3 aren't as much fun as they could be, and the developers are still working out ways to add them in that don't feel gimmicky (Metal Gear Solid 4 sounds like it will have a more natural use for the motion controls). The backwards compatability with the older PS systems was my primary reason for getting the PS3, along with the ability to install Linux. :-> Flynn

If you are more into games, Wii seems to have more, but the thing I like about the PS3 is you can play PS2 and PS2 games, and you can download a trial of new games to see if you want to invest in the game. Plus you have the BluRay player, play MP3s, show pics etc. It's really my husband's media center.

I'd say a 360 is the best choice right now, with the Wii a close second (possibly taking the lead eventually). The PS3 is a nice system, but it doesn't have a large enough library to justify the overly large price. If you don't have a PS2 then get one. They're cheap, and even though it's not the newest system it has by far the largest library.

Thanks. I thought it did 480p and widescreen, but wasn't sure. Err on the side of caution and all that, heh. The internal RAM is nice, but when you start getting in to the N64 games, those can get rather large. Having even a 10 gb hard drive would have been a better deal, in my opinion. :-D The PS2 will also do widescreen, though its implimentation leaves something to be desired (Final Fantasy 12's widescreen isn't that great for example). Running in widescreen without progressive scan is just... wrong. Flynn

Last week ...or the week before Sony annouced a future update to all versions of the PS3 dropping compatibility for the PS2.....This feature will disappear shortly.

Yes, and some are complaining while others aren't. I'm glad I got mine when I did, heh. They removed the EE chip (Emotion Engine) from the 80 gb model, though it supports PS2 through software emulation. With the new 40 gb model out next month, they will be removing the other chip (the GS chip, I think it's called) that will remove the software emulation as well -- which will effectively remove the PlayStation 1 emulation as well. If you are a serious gamer then the Xbox 360 or PS3 with I'd say the PS3 being best in the coming two years as developers release some truly amazing games for it. Just like the Xbox 360 took awhile to be properly used when it was released. If you aren't a serious gamer then I'd get a Wii. They are going to release a Star Wars game for it with a lightsaber. That is going to ROCK. :-D I'd *like* a PS3 but I'd have at most 3 hours a week to play on it and frankly it isn't worth the money for that kind of use. A Wii is less than half the price and can be played for 15 minutes a night and you still have fun.

I don't know. There's a number of arguments for spending the cost of a PS3 other than game library. For instance, the 60 and 80 gb models have access to the exceptionally large PS2 library of games, plus you have the lowest cost of entry for a Blu-Ray player, a PPC 64-based Linux computer, upgradeable hardware and firmware, and a number of other things that make the cost more attractive. As much as we love the native PS3 games we have, we still buy a number of PS2 games and play many of the ones we currently have. There's even a number of the old PS1 role-playing games I play (Arc the Lad and Lunar in particular). So, yes the PS3 has fewer native games than the Xbox 360, but the backwards compatability opens the door to a ton more. :-> Flynn
