If you are a serious gamer then the Xbox 360 or PS3 with I'd say the PS3 being best in the coming two years as developers release some truly amazing games for it. Just like the Xbox 360 took awhile to be properly used when it was released. If you aren't a serious gamer then I'd get a Wii. They are going to release a Star Wars game for it with a lightsaber. That is going to ROCK. :-D I'd *like* a PS3 but I'd have at most 3 hours a week to play on it and frankly it isn't worth the money for that kind of use. A Wii is less than half the price and can be played for 15 minutes a night and you still have fun.

I'd say a 360 is the best choice right now, with the Wii a close second (possibly taking the lead eventually). The PS3 is a nice system, but it doesn't have a large enough library to justify the overly large price. If you don't have a PS2 then get one. They're cheap, and even though it's not the newest system it has by far the largest library.

I don't know. There's a number of arguments for spending the cost of a PS3 other than game library. For instance, the 60 and 80 gb models have access to the exceptionally large PS2 library of games, plus you have the lowest cost of entry for a Blu-Ray player, a PPC 64-based Linux computer, upgradeable hardware and firmware, and a number of other things that make the cost more attractive. As much as we love the native PS3 games we have, we still buy a number of PS2 games and play many of the ones we currently have. There's even a number of the old PS1 role-playing games I play (Arc the Lad and Lunar in particular). So, yes the PS3 has fewer native games than the Xbox 360, but the backwards compatability opens the door to a ton more. :-> Flynn

You may like the new 40 gb model coming out next month. Though, there are trade-offs -- you lose half the USB ports (two instead of four), backwards compatability, and the memory card reader. Unlike the original 20 gb model, this one does have the Wi-Fi. I think it's supposed to be $399 and will have Spider-Man 3 on Blu-Ray packed in the box (likely through the holidays -- then the movie pack-in goes away). The 80 gb model has dropped to $499 and the remaining 60 gb models are $449. Oh, and the slim PS2 is dropping to $99. :-> Flynn

Still, €400 euro is a lot of money for a games machine. Still, I am glad they have a cheaper option that isn't crippled.

Well, dang. My post got swallowed. Here's a "quick" synopsis: Wii * Wider family friendly selection * Classic NES, SNES, N64 TurboGraphix 16 games on Virtual Console * Motion controls * Backwards compatable with GameCube games and peripherals (except GameBoy Adapter) * Doesn't support HDTV (pro or con, depending on your setup) * Doesn't play movies (that I know of) * No internal hard drive -- must use SD card to store settings, game saves, and Virtual Console games * Rumble controllers available (Wii-mote) * Online gaming not a priority with Nintendo PlayStation 3 * Less of a game selection for native games * 60gb and 80gb versions backwards compatable with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games * Gyroscopic sensor in controller for motion controls (not as involving as Wii) * Plays a plethera of media types, including DVD and Blu-Ray video * Upscales PlayStation/PlayStation 2 games and DVD movies to HD * Doesn't works as well with standard definition TVs (SDTV) * Can install Linux on internal drive to use as a computer * Can link to computer through network for media serving * Rumble controllers not available until 2008 * Online games are free to play (some MMORPGs will have subscription fees -- none so far) * Hard drive upgradeable using standard SATA 2.5" notebook drives PlayStation 2 * Large selection of native games with more still being made * Peripherals (memory cards, controllers, etc.) are still being manufactured * Lowest cost of getting started * Backwards compatable with PlayStation games * Works with SDTV and HDTV setups * Supported games use 480p and even 1080i for sharper image (using component cables) * Rumble controllers available * Most games are free to play online (that support online play) Personally, I own the PlayStation, the PlayStation 2 and the 60 gb PlayStation 3 (upgraded to a 120 gb hard drive). I wouldn't mind getting a Wii (personally I think some of the games sound like a blast to play). The gyroscopic motion controls on the PS3 aren't as much fun as they could be, and the developers are still working out ways to add them in that don't feel gimmicky (Metal Gear Solid 4 sounds like it will have a more natural use for the motion controls). The backwards compatability with the older PS systems was my primary reason for getting the PS3, along with the ability to install Linux. :-> Flynn

Another correction - presuming you mean 'Doesn't work as well as the Wii with SDTV' - the PS3 is fine with SDTV - it just doesn't look as good as on HDTV. I've currently got my PS3 hooked up to an ancient CRT TV (pre-DVD!) and it is fine. Of course, when I upgrade to a nice HD screen, it'll be even better ;P!

I have had a PS3 for 3 months now and am well happy with it. Games play well, high definition TV definetly adds more to games and bluray playback. Have had no hardware problems and setting it up with my wireless network was as easy as entering my WEP key. My only gripe has been the initial price of the games, but now they seem to be dropping to the £30-£40 price for new releases is not so bad.

I would get a PS3. Wii is no competition for X360 and PS3 if you are a serious gamer. It's not even a next-gen console, if you compare it's capabilities it is somewhat similar to PS2 (graphics, processing power). It is a great TOY, the controllers are awesome and I would like to have one to play on some birthday parties and such, but if I had to choose only one console it would be X360 or PS3 (and this depends on available titles). I own a PS2 currently.

                            Kind regards, Pawel Krakowiak

You want to get a Wii with an Xbox 360 too (probably ends up same price as a PS3 anyway!)... it's my setup, reason why is: - 360 has great online play, Xbox Live is amazing when playing fps games like GoW, CoD3 and Halo 3 - 360 has more serious games like BioShock, Call of Duty, Gotham Racing than the Wii - Wii is more a party type console with WiiSports/WarioWare type games, which is very fun with lots of friends in your house but no real online play to speak of. You can still play the console on single player nights with games like Zelda, Trauma Center and others. - For the Wii don't expect anything more powerfull than a PS2 game in terms of graphics, especially with ports (they seem to port over the ps2 version, probably because it wouldn't support a 360/PS3 port)... classic examples of this was Spiderman 3 or Transformers - great games on the 360, but not so good on the Wii in comparison. - The Wii controller adds a new dimension to alot of games, and the more the experiment with it the better it is getting. This is something you wont get on either the 360 or the PS3 (even tho they stole the idea of a motion sensor after scrapping their boomerang pad!). Oh - it has to be said that Achievement Points on the 360 actually make gaming a little more interesting too, with mates trying to out-do each other with achievement points (you get about 1000 per game available, with achievements for different things, like maybe 15 points for "get a triple kill" in Halo 3 or "terminal velocity - fall 30000ft" in Portal (a game in The Orange Box). Hopefully Nintendo will start putting on extra "channels" on the Wii, so we will have more than weather, wiimii's and a web browser in the main menus.

If you want longevity then the PS3 is the one to go for. I believe like the PS2, it will eventually come out on top due to the types of titles being released for it however the hash that Sony made of the pricing and the launch hasn't helped. Xbox360 will always seem like a half hearted console and I don't think it will shake this fact off for a while. The Wii is great initially but you have to wonder if Nintendo will simply stop supporting it or suffocate the game titles like they did with their earlier (and somewhat superior consoles). I currently own a PS2, PS3 and a Dreamcast, mainly down to the fact that the games I own can only be played on that particular console. The console market is much more competitive this time round with some very good titles on Xbox360 as well as the Wii (Legend of Zelda etc) so its very difficult to choose. If I had the money, I would get all three!

Funny, having a very similar discussion with other pals on a different board. I'd go for the Wii, simply because I have a PC for when I want to play "serious" games. I personally hate FPS on a console, it's kb/mouse or nothing in my opinion. I don't like that all online play is through XBox Live, which I'm not willing to pay for. And honestly, there's maybe 3 titles on the 360 that I can't play on my PC. I'll live. :) PS3 I won't touch until the world makes up its mind on if it's going Blu-Ray or HDDVD. Not paying $500 when half of the cost could very well be a next gen Betamax next year.

PS3 is still overpriced and has no selection of good games. Wii is seriously underpowered, lacks the maturity of the 360, and has no selection of good games that aren't rehashes. 360 is the way to go.

I purchased a Wii for the family. GREAT family console. My 4 year old can even play with it. It is also the complete party package. When we have people over the Wii gets slammed with action. I do not think you can find a better drinking game personally.. hehe :D However if it was just me, I would prefer something like a PS3 or XBox360 because the games are better (more adult driven consoles). So if it's for you only, get the PS3. If it's for the family, definitely get the Wii. Me personally I game on the PC (online man myself).

I've had the PS3 for almost 10 months now. I can't say enough great things about it. I have around 7 games and 5 blueray movies. I play it on a Sony 50 inch HD LCD tv. It's awesome! It also plays normal DVD's and really improves the picture quality. I really like the free downloads of demo games. The bluetooth wireless internet connaction is great too. If you want HD go with the PS3. I haven't mastered any of the games yet so there's always something to play. I really enjoy playing Madden 07 on-line against other people. If you both have a headset you can talk to each other while your playing which really makes playing on-line much more enjoyable. I use a bluetooth headset. It took me a little bit to figure out I had to connected to it before I start the game. I've been completely satisfied with me PS3. If you have the money get the PS# with a HD LCD tv and make sure you have highspeed internet. Best Wishes on your decision. T-Dog.
