PS3 or Wii ?
-
I think it depends on the games you are interested in playing. It's my understanding that the PS3 is for the more serious gamer, were as the Wii is geared towards family entertainment. If it were my decision, I would get a Wii ... If I play games anymore, I want my games to be simple and fun, not a full-time job. My 2c.

I can't imagine why they would want to consider dropping PS2 compatibility. If anything, I'd consider that as one of the primary reasons to go with a PS3 over other consoles. The gaming catalog for PS3 (through PS1 & PS2 compatibility) far exceeds any of the other consoles. I'd really be interested in reading the article you noted if still know where you found it. Thanks!

I have had both a Wii and 60 gig PS3 since shortly after their launches, and while the Wii was a blast to play at first it's charm fades fast. The Wii is still pretty fun when you have a group of people around to play with, but once you and your friends are sick of 3-4 decent party games for the system you'll be left with an expensive NES/SNES/Genesis emulator that your wife will use more than you. Or at least that's how my time with a Wii has turned out. The PS3 on the other hand is fun to play with or without friends, but it's also suffering from a lack of really good games. But if you're like me and really only play games 5 - 10 hours a week those several games that are really good will probably hold you over until some of the bigger titles begin to come out for the system. And there's always all of the great PSOne/2 games you can play as well. Both systems are good, and both systems will be getting better, but they are targeted at completely different groups of people.

I have owned a Wii for almost a year now. Havent played much on the PS3 so I cannot give a comparison, but I can tell you that I have enjoyed the Wii a lot. It has better than average graphics but it more than makes up for any lackings in the visual department with its unique playstyle. If you stick to games created by Nintendo you cant go wrong. Unfortunately some of the other game companies rushed out to make below average Wii games only to have something on the market. Games like Zelda, Metroid, Res Evil 4 and Madden were all very well done. You wont be disappointed with a Wii.

We have a PS2, which works great on the SDTV in the kids playroom. The only games I have seen hyped for the PS3 look way too violent for my grade school kids. The Wii has many very family-friendly games which my kids absolutely love... and Wii looks good on the SDTV Then there is the whole isswue of Sony and their corporate ethics. Does anyone remember the root-kit fiasco? How about Sony's involvement with the RIAA? This is the same Sony who gave us Betamax tapes when the world wanted VHS, Memory Sticks when we all wanted USB, and now the whole Blue-Ray scheme. For all these reasons, I will NEVER buy another Sony product.

For me (the wife actually) it's all about Zelda. If Zelda was on a different platform then I'd be buying that system. They managed to upgrade Mario and keep it interesting also. DigitalRacer

I was thinking the same thing. I picked up a 360 about 3 months ago. I think it is great. After getting over my wow addiction, 360 is a lot of fun. I've been over to friends houses to play PS3 and Wii, but I still think 360 is the way to go for most gamers. Good rounded selection of games on a pretty powerful console. The Wii is a good console for hanging out with friends, I'll admit I'd like to have the Wii also just to play Zelda and Metroid. To me it's really a choice between Wii and Xbox360. It ultimately comes down to the games you want to play. PS3 just doesn't have the game options yet.

Another correction - presuming you mean 'Doesn't work as well as the Wii with SDTV' - the PS3 is fine with SDTV - it just doesn't look as good as on HDTV. I've currently got my PS3 hooked up to an ancient CRT TV (pre-DVD!) and it is fine. Of course, when I upgrade to a nice HD screen, it'll be even better ;P!
I haven't tried mine at SD (though it's certainly possible to set within the system). Mine is currently set to 1080i (the best my TV supports) and most of my games run at 720p. I think Harry Potter runs at 1080i, but I'm not entirely certain -- I'll have to check the packaging again. I don't think I've heard of any of the early PS3 games suffering from "SD syndrome" -- a condition where playing a game in SD results in a picture that is nigh unplayable. A few early XBox 360 game had that problem (Dead Rising comes to mind). Flynn

Still, €400 euro is a lot of money for a games machine. Still, I am glad they have a cheaper option that isn't crippled.

Oh, yeah. Forgot you were across the pond, heh. In that case, the 40 gb model is already available there -- not sure about the Spider-Man 3 pack-in bundle in Europe. It may be a US-only bundle. Flynn

Well with the ps3 having motion sensors in the controller, it technically does everything the Wii does plus about 200 other functions the Wii cant do. And to be honest you have to be a specific type of gamer to play the Wii -- super casual, almost not even interested. I personally have not been able to play ANY Wii game for more than a half an hour before getting bored on any given day. And then I stop playing. I mean swinging away in real life can be done for only so long before your either tired, lazy or simply just not willing to continue. And ya it sounds like a work out and it'd be a positive thing, but check out www.wiihaveaproblem.com (i think thats the link). Anyways in conclusion, you can spend $279 or whatever on a SD system of which 90% of the games are targeted to kids under 10 all so you have this unique motion captioning controller... OR you can buy a 20gb - 40gb ($380 - $399) respectively for a SD & HD system, which had games aimed at kids & girlfriends/wives (see: Super Ruba Dub lol) all the way through to the near sadistic gore junkie. Either model of which comes with luxurious Blu-Ray, the ability to upscale your dvd collection, free internet play, a music player, and of course lets not forget the whole draw to the Wii, which the ps3 has as well: motion sensitive controllers. Compare feature lists of the Wii and PS3 as well as the price difference. Your answer should be clear as day once you do that.

The motion controls in the Wii and the PS3 are based on two separate technologies. The Wii uses an infrared sensor strapped to your TV to read the movements of the remote. The PS3, on the other hand, is based on a gyroscopic sensor. The range of motions on the Wii is much greater than the tilt functionality of the PS3. However, set to the right sensitivity setting, the tilt controls on the PS3 can make better/more intuitive flight controls than the Wii-mote. Lair and Warhawk are great examples. :) Flynn

The Wii is cheap fun for all ages. The Wii-mote is totally rad and can be replaced by an old fashioned Nintendo controller for us lazy old guys! The PS3 is mouth-wateringly good, high-priced, next generation fun. When your guy gets shot on the game, you actually start to bleed! But the games are taking a lot longer to make and thus they are much more expensive. The controllers no longer rumble:mad:, they have something inside that detects when you move the controller side to side, up and down or forward and back, thus adding another level of controls, so games can now add gestures to all those pressure sensitive buttons, d-pads and joysticks! Loads of fun, if you can afford it. (There are rumors from Sony of a work on another, much cheaper PS3-esque system. Can we say, no BluRay?) I think you should buy a PS2. There are over 2000 games available, with new ones coming out all the time. The graphics rock and they have a nice line of Hit Titles at $20! Another idea? What about a PSP. The wife can still use the HiDef screen and you can turn it on mute and play at church! There is the Nintendo DS as well.

Bad Astronomy |VCF|wxWidgets|WTLCan you play Halo on either of them? Hint: No It will be at least a year before you see the full potential of the PS3 (same as it was for the 360 and any other console ever). Buy a 360 and take all the money you saved and buy a bunch of games with it. By the time good games come out for the PS3 it will probably be $200 cheaper. I want to want to buy the other consoles too, but I can't justify it. Mario Galaxy is the only thing Wii got thats cool besides Zelda: Twilight Princess, and I got that for the Gamecube (best game ever!). Go to www.gamespot.com[^] and compare the games list for each console (and the PC). Good luck, Will

Well I own the 360, PS3 and the Wii. I've had one of each since approximately launch (got my PS3 a few months after launch). I have way more games for my 360 than either of the other two and I play it a lot more. When games are on multiple platforms, I read reviews (download demos) and look it over, but in the end I almost always end up with the 360 variant (typically it is 10 bucks cheaper for some stupid reason than the PS3). The only game that I want right now that is on multiple platforms that I haven't made a firm decision about which version (360 or PS3) I want is Dynasty Warriors: Gundam. In a lot of cases, the graphics are so similar between the two high end consoles that I can't tell much difference (with a few exceptions). One of the biggest things that drives me a lot of the time is the fact that the 360 controller feels better in my hands after a few hours of playing. I've tried playing Dynasty/Samurai Warriors games on the PS3 controller and after a couple of hours the muscle between my thumb and forefinger on my right hand hurts like mad. As for the Wii, I try to play, but I get ticked off with some of the controls. It has the right idea with its controller, but other than wiiplay, wiisports and zelda, the games that I have played on it just don't seem to behave naturally. WiiBowling is amazing. I played it first at a friends place and after figuring it out (1.5 frames), I converted what used to be my typical IRL bowling score into the Wii game (it was that natural for me). My friends laughed at me because I was actually starting in a bowling stance and walking and sliding like I normally would. They stopped laughing when I crested 200 and they were barely above 100. :) All in all it is a preference thing. I got my PS3 when I did, because I didn't want to have one that lost full compatibility with the removal of the Emotion Chip that they did for Europe and Korea (and maybe with the latest ones here). I've happily disconnected my PS2 and along with my 360 Elite I have now removed the last remnants of the old republic... err... component video. I haven't bothered buying the Progressive scan cable for the Wii. Hope this helps, D

I've really enjoyed some of the first person shooters on PS3 and Xbox360. For instance Resistance was great and so was Gears of War. But lately I've playing Metroid Prime 3 which is just excellent and the controls give you so much freedom. I admit for the most part the Wii has a more family friendly line up, but if you're looking to play FPS then you have to at least try Metroid Prime 3. -Peter
