Being a carpenter would've been fun, I think.

For those of you that make your living writing software: Let's say that for whatever reason you never became a professional software developer, what do you think you would you be doing for a living? I think I would probably have been a chef but there is a slight possibility I might have been a commercial artist or an actor.

Things I'm good at, so I might have fallen into one of them: - Tech writer - Shopkeeper (bookstore especially) - Teacher Things I'm not good at, but might have tried anyway: - Actor - Stand-up comedian - Soldier

Probably would have gone into computer hardware, I used to enjoy getting my hands dirty and getting physical with the damn things. If we're competly getting rid of IT then I'd like to have been a mechanic.

Army is always a good career. More than anything else, it gives you a satisfaction that you serve and protect your motherland. :)

Engineering != Carpentry... I'm talking about using my hands to actually build houses (and other woody things). Not design them. :)

I was a senior programmer for years and was given the choice of changing careers and I chose to start my own Home Improvement biz. Like to work with my hands! And am damn good at it to. Mike

I have been an Electrician but didn't like building sites. I was a Soldier in the Parachute Regiment until injury stopped me jumping. I am a Company Accountant and have been for 15 Boring Years. I am Learning C# to stop being an accountant! I most of all though would like to be the guy who hires out jet ski's from a small shack on a tropical island, working from hammock and lazing about!

That's the tricking question... Sometimes I think: "Need to change, do something else..." But the problem is what? I have no clue... And after a while when I think of what I do when they allow me to do it I like writing software... So I guess my stuck until... X| :rose::laugh: And frankly, if you spend time around here in code project land, I guess you like it too much to change (for most of us) :-D:laugh:

I was going to go in the airforce but my accident made shure I couldn't join. I could never get passed the physical examn nor withstand the physical trials I'd have to take, not anymore.

Well, either I would have joined the military out of college, which was my original plan before getting hooked on programming, or I would have kept swinging a hammer, and furthered my construction career.

Book store owner. At least, this is what I hope to be doing in a few years. :)

Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis. I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

ditto, I would so LOVE to be that.

For those of you that make your living writing software: Let's say that for whatever reason you never became a professional software developer, what do you think you would you be doing for a living? I think I would probably have been a chef but there is a slight possibility I might have been a commercial artist or an actor.

I think I'd be a Nutritionist. I almost majored in nutrition in college. I am still very interested in the subject and think I'd be able to help people.
