WinXP driving me nuts
-
Got a bigger harddisk in my laptop and decided to install Windows XP... And boy, what a frustation it turned out to be... I installed Visual Studio 6, Visual Studio .Net, Embedded Visual Studio 3, Office 2000 + SR1a. WinAmp and ZoneAlarm and the security hotfixes (using the new Windows Update site). And as usual, I set the security zone settings to my liking (but I shouldn't have done that). Two major frustations: The freaking "inactive icons" in the traybar. My CPU icon of the TaskManager (among others) is now "inactive" and refuses to show, even when the inactive icon functionality is turned off! The iconstream for this can be reset by tossin' two reg keys, according to a MS KB article, but to no effect. The second major frustation are non-functional security zone settings. Whatever changes I try to the security zones in the Internet Explorer 6 options, certificates are no longer shown, but the downloaded CABs are instantly installed, which is BAD. I can no longer use the (new) Windows Update site, because ActiveX controls can no longer be executed in script. My girlfriend (logged in using 'switch user') can no longer log into hotmail, and messenger refuses to load; looks like another zone problem. Microsoft has several KB's concerning the security zones and I've even read stories by other people in the IE6 newsgroup with similar problems. None of the 'solutions' work! I've tried reinstalling IE6 (which is an undertaking of its own), but nothing can fix my Zone problems. I am about to compare zone settings in the registry to those in a MS KB article. And no, ZoneAlarm is not causing the problems either. If the security settings compare doesn't fix my problems, then it's back to Windows 2000! Bye bye XP, see you again when SP1 arrives... Maybe. Victor, I think most of your problems are due to inexperience with the new features of the operating system. This is a general questions forum -- why don't you ask some of the people here for advice in fixing your problems? If you don't really want any help, then please move this thread to the "Rant n Rave" forum, and help keep the signal-to-noise ratio in this forum low. -- Paul "I drank... WHAT?"

Paul A. Howes wrote: I think most of your problems are due to inexperience with the new features of the operating system I'd like to think that I'm an highly experienced Windows user. The Windows XP settings that I have problems with don't make sense to me at all as they don't react as I expect them to. When I'm running the Task Manager, the CPU load icon should appear, especially if the "Hide Inactive Icon" functionality is off! Even with the functionality is on AND I've set the CPU load icon to be "always visible", shouldn't it appear? This is what I expect and it doesn't do that! If I set "Download signed ActiveX controls" security setting to "Prompt" for the Internet Zone in Internet Explorer, why are all CAB files downloading and installing without showing the certificate first and then requesting me to respond yes or no? I've read about all the KB articles and IE6 newsgroup topics on security zones, but none help me solve the problems. I did read of similar problems. Why is MSN messenger not loading when logged in as a second user on the machine? As Elmer Fudd would say, "vewy stwange". Ok, it actually was a cry for help, so if anyone has a solution, then the three day install session and lots of hours KB browsing and trying would not be waisted time.... VictorV

I've had this problem for a while. Task Manager isn't the only tasktray icon that does this. Sometimes logging off and back on fixes it, sometimes not. Also, if I switch to the blue "special" look/theme, everything works great when I next log in. Sometimes it's enough to put in and remove a lot of tasktray icons before getting the Task Manager running. It's very inconsistant and I believe many people have this problem. None of my collegues have these problems and MS KB doesn't mention the problems at all. I thought I was going nuts! Thanx for the response. VictorV
