I often complain about the Chatty Cathy's I work. Encountering the CC's in the non-work world is usually not as bad because you can move. However, I went to my chiropractor and decided to get a massage. The therapist would not shut up the entire time. She asked me how to make Taverns (referred to as Sloppy Joes in some areas). I'm here to relax, lady. So a couple questions... Has this happened to you before (stuck in a situation with a CC and can't easily leave)? What is a polite way to say, "Shut up?" Do any of you have TMJ? If so what have you found for relief? The chiropractor isn't helping much.

Mine only got mostly-cured after I had braces to correct my bite. Braces weren't fun as a forty-something but, looking back, it was worth it. Took my orthodontist more than 2 years to get my teeth where he wanted them, they were that bad. They weren't particularly crooked but were so far away from the correct bite for the configuration of my jaw. I'm one of the three "star" patients on the first page of his before-and-after book. I haven't had a single incident since about 1/2 way through the process and the braces have been gone for 2 years. I still get a popping noise occasionally since my upper and lower jaws don't quite match in size but no pain or muscle spasms preventing me from opening or biting. Hmmmm, two years this week now that I think about it. :-D Judy :-D:-D (Aren't they purty?)

Take a long time to reply and use short responses that do not invoke additional details. Instead of replying: "Oh, I love taverns. I use my grandmother's secret recipe that has been handed done for generations" Reply: "*long pause* They have sloppy joe mix in the market."

http://www.crazyboards.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=489[^] Any amphetamine can cause tension and jaw clenching, just about any stimulant can. I have noticed that my shoulders and back are extremely tense at times and I started clenching my jaw sometimes after two week on Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin can also be used to treat ADHD/ADD.

I wasn't saying you should take Wellbutrin. I was pointing out the fact that any kind of mental stimulation caused by stimulating substances can cause tension throughout the body. Including the anti-depressant Wellbutrin. And yes, Wellbutrin can be prescribed to help relieve the symptoms of narcolepsy, but perhaps it didn't work for you and thats why you said that.

Heh. Just got back from the dentist (cleanings). My wife and i scheduled our appointments to coincide, but i was done a good 20 minutes before she was. See, apart from briefly exchanging pleasantries, i don't talk to the dentist or hygienist, while she keeps a running conversation going with one or both of them throughout the entire appointment. Then again, she gets more free dental swag than i do, so i guess the chatty thing is working for her. And yes, she suffers from TMJ - they took a mold of her lower teeth and made a clear, flexible bite guard that she wears at night. Seems to work pretty well.

When I met my wife some 20 years ago, she carried cards around in her wallet that said "Your story has touched my heart, never before have I come across a person with more trouble than you. My heart bleeds for you. Please accept this card as a token of my sympathy. Now f*** off and annoy someone else." I found a sample at: http://www.strangecosmos.com/content/item/102480.html[^] My apologies if this annoys somebody (not really) DR

My girlfriend suffers with TMJ; she has a mouthguard & has regular massage therapy sessions which have generally kept the pain under control. However she has recently starting with acupuncture & this has been the most successful treatment yet, she will often go for days after completely pain-free. Day to day she swims & has said this also helps. The common thread with all these being to relax the muscle tensions in the head, neck, shoulders & back. As for the other, I would try grunting unresponsively or just ignoring the chatter with an "oh I'm sorry I missed that" if necessary. They'll soon get the message.

Just lay a big ol' nasty fart on her. She won't say anything....

Same here. Rice Dream[^] ice cream is a pretty good substitute.

Ask Chatty if she heard the Mark Levin show last night. Start talking about your political views... guarenteed to clear any room.
