Just wanted to rant about how annoying cars are. I just picked mine up from the mechanic, and there is over $600 just in labour... so parts on top of that... i was too scared to ask Whats your horror stories with cars?

I bought a 1980 commodore about three years ago for $1500. Had it serviced every 6 months. Drove it to work pretty much every day, from Sydney to Adelaide and back, up and down the east coast several times and just sold it for $1100. Best car I've ever owned.

Have you tried asking? And tried asking other echanics for a second opinion? And then asked them exactly what will happen if they, say, use an ordinary sump plug instead of the gold plated one they are pushing? I find it amazing how a bill can start at $1000 and end up at $250 after you start picking it apart.

      cheers, Chris Maunder

Yeah I have, and my mechanic always came in the cheapest (or not far from it). But my family has been using this mechanic for ages, so I trust them more then I do the other mechanics.

If you didn't ask, how did you know how much to pay ? You already know that the labour was $600, right ?

For peace of mind, unless you are a car expert, always buy a new car.

It's always been the other way for me. I was once charged 25 bucks labor to replace my front left signal indicator light which cost 2 bucks :-(

Probably signed the credit card slip without looking at the actual amount or perhaps by mentally blurring it out. Oh you know, the same way women shop!

Well, it's better than spending 5000 annually on a lemon, right? And there are always loans. And you need not always buy a Lexus or a BMW. You could go for a cheap Kia, for instance. Won't get you too many dates though :-)

LOL... i think it would take more for me to get a date then a new BMW I had to take out a loan to buy my current car (Subaru Impreza GX).. and it has been good until now. I've almost paid it off, and the car is still valued at over $15k so I may be able to trade it in on a new WRX :-D (with a loan of course)

It is kind of festive season here with Diwali the crowning festival. All the car and two-wheeler shops throw open offers like 'No charge Inspection' of your vehicles. But only after inspection, you would be guaranteed of 'Wallet-Blast Syndrome'. You would get an unnecessary spare part replacement and all those things. Even if you excuse and come, the good-running vehicle would automatically develop technical snags in a couple of days, the secret of which being, during inspection itself, some of the healthy parts would have got surreptiously removed/replaced by those cunning mechanics.
