Well, it's better than spending 5000 annually on a lemon, right? And there are always loans. And you need not always buy a Lexus or a BMW. You could go for a cheap Kia, for instance. Won't get you too many dates though :-)

I had the quote, but wasnt game to look at it after he told me about the labour... but now i have looked at it, the parts are $420

LOL... i think it would take more for me to get a date then a new BMW I had to take out a loan to buy my current car (Subaru Impreza GX).. and it has been good until now. I've almost paid it off, and the car is still valued at over $15k so I may be able to trade it in on a new WRX :-D (with a loan of course)

Just wanted to rant about how annoying cars are. I just picked mine up from the mechanic, and there is over $600 just in labour... so parts on top of that... i was too scared to ask Whats your horror stories with cars?

It is kind of festive season here with Diwali the crowning festival. All the car and two-wheeler shops throw open offers like 'No charge Inspection' of your vehicles. But only after inspection, you would be guaranteed of '
Wallet-Blast Syndrome'. You would get an unnecessary spare part replacement and all those things. Even if you excuse and come, the good-running vehicle would automatically develop technical snags in a couple of days, the secret of which being, during inspection itself, some of the healthy parts would have got surreptiously removed/replaced by those cunning mechanics. :mad:Vasudevan Deepak Kumar Personal Homepage Tech Gossips

In our country (UK), repairs tend to be cheaper for non Japanese and Germany cars, a back street garage can be 60-70% cheaper than that of a dealership. I'd always buy a car that was 1 year old, and go for the reliabilty angle; Honda, Toyota are the best cars to buy, but they generally have the most expensive parts. A Opel/Vauxhall is cheaper to buy, the parts are cheap but the car is a whole lot less unreliable.

USE IT.On my street there is a mobile mechanic (luckily a friend of mine) he'll only charge a fraction of the dealerships and will diagnose the problem for free (VW will charge £80 to pop the bonnet/hood open before even fixing the problem).

They had to remove the freaking radiator fan AND the battery to get to the light. Took half an hour. All the other lights I change myself (takes about 2 minutes to get them replaced), but the front left light assembly is totally inaccessible.

Wow,you got one cheap mechanic! Last time I put my Big baby(as opposed to my little baby) into the garage for a service it was over £800. Thats about $1700 in todays money! To be fair though, my big baby has 2 engines!

Ahhh you get no simpathy here. Try living in Singapore No cars older than 10 years Approx 200% the Australian price (Govt taxes) and worst of all nowhere to drive. Bright spots - hardly any traffic jams, taxis are cheap and they do have a great public transport infrastructure. But I LIKE driving. Still it is saving me a fortune by not owning a car.

My Ford Mondeo just got written off in a motorwy accident (I was ok fortunately), since I wasn't at fault I got a hire car from Helphire[^] who charge it to the person who caused the accident. Found another 3 year old Mondeo (in panther black :cool: )so picking it up in a couple of weeks. Elaine :rose:
