A reply from an HR Executive (In India)
-
My friend has got an offer from one of the leading software firms of India. As his present company is not willing to relieve him immediately he asked the HR of the new company for some time to join. See below, Hi Raj(name changed), Sorry to tell you that i need two months time to join you because the project which i am currently dealing with is going through a critical implementation phase. So i cannot leave the present company without a two months notice.I humbly request you to look into the matter and do the needful. and the reply from the HR Executive was this. You are denying an offer of a brand name and therefore will be mark blacklisted in the ---- group & other associated companies. Think about yourself first otherwise you can not grow vertically and horizontally. My trust is alive on you and I would suggest you to do not spoil the relations. Your DOJ with the company will be 10th December, take it or leave it. waiting, Now,What should be the response for this mail.Considering his skill and experience its not difficult for him to get other offers.

Honestly, If I was the one who got such a reply, then i would just turn down that offer not worrying about the further consequences. I would make the HR Executive realize that you can't force someone to join the company, at least not by threatening them about ruining their future. If an individual possess skills, then he/she will always have a future. No one can ruin it by blacklisting their name in any group. :)

Yup. Frantic; Desparate and whatever words that pepper or spice up can be used to describe the HR guy. In a humourous tone, we can also try to make the most use of that guy and fleece him too to demand like $500 per hour and that should make him come down on his knees and flee from the scene.

Definitely. There is a Tamil proverb that "

Tell the HR exec to go pound salt. He's nuts. Would anybody want to work for an organization that relates to potential employees in such a manner?

True. At least till the time the employee becomes a part of the (organizational) family, he should be treated on par a potential client. After joining, he is part of 'ONE' family, under the banner of the organization name. If at all such mundane things creep in, it just spells catastrophe on the healthy relationships and rapports in the organization and acts as a slow-poison to the growth of the organization itself.

Does this guy work for the company your friend wants to join or is he a third party being payed for recuriting your friend. If he is a recruiter tell him to get stuffed. He'll want his comission a week later rather than not at all. Your friend might also like to point out something along the lines of... Simply don't reply, I know I wouldn't. I find it rather offensive and out of proportion to blacklist someone that is loyal and stands for his own integrity. If the market is as good as here in the Netherlands, he will sure find another company to work for.

Bizarre way to approach recruitment. In the UK it is, I believe, a criminal offence to 'blacklist' someone. Apart from any other consideration the blacklister would get sued.

I have friends working in the same company and most of them are happy. So can we take this as an immature response from an individual HR and should we consider this type of offer.

Tell him to contact the HR director to tell them how insulted he feels by this individual, and because of that person, the job prospect has been made unattractive. I am sure they will appreciate the feedback. If nothing comes from it, well then it cant be that good.

In the UK the term blacklist (whilst inherently a threat) means that you are placed an on exclusion list of some sort. The common usage of blackmail is to extort money from somebody under the threat of exposure of some secret or other. Why is everyone so damned pedantic? Get a life.
