I can never remember which one is important volts or amps. I have crappy old Chinese wireless router with a Continental power supply. It sucks and its dangerous (its loose in the socket), I want to replace it with a proper Irish (UK) transformer. The device says it requires 9 volts 0.8 amps, my local Maplin (electronics shops) doesn't do one at precisely that spec. They do have one however one that delivers 9 volts 1 amp. Is that ok, will it explode, if I use it ?

I think its ok as long as you have enough amps, so the 9v 1amp should do. Also make sure to check the polarity of the connector.

The Volts is the important one to match. The Amps is a max that should be drown from the adapter. So yes that one should work well.

The volts are the big thing but you also have to make sure that you have enough amps or you can strain the adaptor. Excessive voltage or reversed polarity is the thing that tends to release the magic grey smoke. Russell

That is fine, the router draws as much current as it needs and the PSU current rating is the mxiumum it will supply. Meow

Wouldn't it just be easier to get a new router? It's not like a decent one is very expensive.

If the new transformer is not a switched one then it might break (the router), this is because it may be that type that means that it will supply 9v @ 1amp, meaning when you draw 1 amp of current, the volgate will be 9 volts, while if you maybe only use half that [amps] then the volgate will rise to maybe 12, and if you not drawing any current, maybe 14 volts. Most power supplies these days do not act like this (and are switching). but to be sure, measure the voltage of the transformer without any load on it. (i have a huge pile of transformers that act like this and back in the day i destroyed expensive camera with one...) And as leppie said, dont forget about checking that + and - come to the right place. (polarity) :)

Licking mains is not sensible. Licking 9v, (if you have established it's not mains) will produce nothing worse than a tingly tongue. Rich
