A funny take on XP vs Vista

Here in England it's near midnight so hopefully my kid sister is in bed.

Well here is it 10:30am, so all the kid sisters are wide awake... and besides, I think we can all imagin the kinds of jokes that could be made, so I dont think anyone actually needs to write them... agreed?

It's funny and all, but years ago, exact same arguments were against XP. Vista is a good OS, many improvements. Sure, it has its problems. Then again, so does XP. And Upgrading from 2000 to XP wasn't much easier for many. I have to agree, I've had problems with vista. BAAAD problems. But everything can be worked around. You _will_ get used to things, and in some cases you will see that it's actually beneficial. (But I do want my file associations dialog back, for one thing :D ) /me reads the post again... No, I am not advertising Vista.

I am planning to upgrade to Vista, but I plan to wait about a year first. That way they have sorted out the worst issues (hopefully)

Yeah I agree. Not only that but it forces you to write much better software that is compliant with the OS now that you're actually forced to follow all the security requirements etc. Every developer, whether they are targetting XP or Vista should make sure their app plays nicely on Vista because it automatically makes for a more secure and easier on the end user app.

Looking at that guys reliabilty Monitor[^], I would suggest that he has some rather dubious hardware or poor quality software installed. The only application failures on my Vista Laptop have been from 5+ year old games, and I don't have a single "Miscellaneous Failure" anywhere in there. So there you have it, my one piece of anecdotal evidence has just rendered that entire article irrelevant! ;P

The only application failures on my Vista Laptop have been from 5+ year old games, and I don't have a single "Miscellaneous Failure" anywhere in there. So there you have it, my one piece of anecdotal evidence has just rendered that entire article irrelevant! ;P

Fair enough. There's probably nothing I can do to make you change your mind, but I guess I should still say this. I suggest that you at least get a trial version running in a VMWare machine in order to familiarize yourself with Vista and I fully agree with John C's reply below.

If your harddrive has enough space you could setup a dual boot system. I have both installed on my desktop although I find myself using XP most of the time. Vista SP1 might change that though!!

Hmmm, I don't remember the upgrade from 2000 to XP having near the problems, in the Press or personally, that the XP to Vista upgrade is having, but that's just my limited opinion and understanding. Given that, our IT group, which I'm one of the managers, have a "Vista" test box running (have since Vista released) and it's still the only machine running it with NO plans to upgrade anyone in the comapny in the future. That's because of the "work arounds" and "You_will_get used to things" issues would cripple the vast majority of our productivity throughout the comapny while our help desk folks run around re-teaching everyone how to use their computers. We will however revisit once that first and mighty SP comes out...maybe... At home, XP lives on all 5 of my computers, including 2 game machines, and it's working great, so why change something that's not broken?

The only application failures on my Vista install at work are from Microsoft applications: CE Platform Builder 5.0 and VS 2005 (although the latter is still usable). It doesn't give me a high degree of confidence that MS's own stuff doesn't work right.
