I always thought it was Nevada that was Vegan Friendly, and Martian Friendly and generally well disposed to Aliens of all persuasions. :)

:-D Nevada wass not too bad, but the best place I've found was California, with San Francisco being the easiest.

I'm travelling to Arizona on Thursday next week and was wondering if anyone knows of any vegetarian/vegan frendly restauants around the Chandler area ? Google is not being particularly helpful as it's mostly listing health food shops.... Any suggestions would be a great help. regards,

A word of warning: to a lot of Americans, "vegetarian" just means "no red meat" - ask for a vegetarian sandwich, for example, and you could find fish or chicken therein... you really will have to spell it out to them... A lot of their big chain-eateries have some pretty wicked self-service salad bars though - you cuold live off them quite happily, bearing in mind what I just said above and being careful... Have fun - it's a beautiful part of the world; hope you get to take in some of the scenery.... Fred

Good point and appreciated. I was thinking the same about the salad bar idea as it would pretty much guarantee lots of nice food. I intend to visit the Grand Canyon (obviously) whilst there and will hopefully get to see lots of other things too. Thanks for the advice, regards,

Curse you and your Geographic Knowledge of a continent on which I don't live! :) OK, Nevada was where the Moon Landings Occurred? And Area 51? And Las Vegas, a place I don't believe exists outside of the imagination of Hollywood Producers! Not Hollywood, a place that only exists in the darker imagination of Nevada's Underworld!

Yeah, you gotta see the GC... but there are lots of others too worth a visit - I think Zion was maybe my favourite - small, but perfectly formed, as they say! If you have the energy to climb up Angel's Landing while there you'll be well rewarded... And if you can stand the thought, and haven't been before, you ought to take a deep breath and visit Las Vegas - there really is nowhere quite like it anywhere else on this planet..! (And as they expect to make their money from gambling, food and hotels are dirt cheap! If you stay off the tables, you can live well for very little there.)

When traveling overseas especially 3rd world countriesI only eat hot soup and dring cold beer. I have now applied that rule to any time I travel. Lately I have dropped the hot soup part. Beer is a vegan dish, and it is sold at any bar and on the airplane. :)

:-) Sounds good, but not all beer is vegan only cold filtered beer - the rest is filtered through isinglass which is made from fish... nasty. regards,

I have never had that experience and was vegetarian for 15 years.. everyone always knew I didn't want ANY meat. At which point I got dead stares because until recently, it was blasphemy to be vegetarian.

This, however, remains true. Slip up even for a second and you'll find pork in your salad or some crap.. it's infuriating. The only meat I eat now is poultry and even that is incredibly difficult to get people to understand. Always wanting to add pork to everything...

Well the Phoenix metro area is pretty much all featureless urban sprawl without trees. Some parts (like Chandler) are less run-down and have fewer trailer parks.

Two responses so far: ----- Pretty much all the Indian and Thai restaurants have veggie dishes. There is Green which is a vegan restaurant on Scottsdale Rd. Just south of there is Udupi (vegetarian indian restaurant)... ----- Swaddee Thai is excellent ... Probably the best in the valley. There are several other good thai places in the area ... but they are the best. They do get busy during lunch and have "off" days.... Even when they are off they are still better than most. I'm travelling to Arizona on Thursday next week and was wondering if anyone knows of any vegetarian/vegan frendly restauants around the Chandler area ? Google is not being particularly helpful as it's mostly listing health food shops.... Any suggestions would be a great help. regards,

I did a search on azcentral.com - the local newspaper site - and found the following: pitajungle (www.pitajungle.com) and souper salad. Dont know about pita jungle, but souper salad is pretty good.
