Linux Distro Recommendation
-
A pal of mine recommended ClarkConnect Linux for my homeserver, basically needs mail + web server + file server capabilities. ClarkConnect appeals to me because I can manage the box through a web interface, although I would really much prefer to use a better known distro. Does anyone know of a small footprint distro < 4gb, that can be managed through a web interface ?

Unlike the ususl idiots who dont read posts completely but start jumping up and down 'I've got something to say, I've got somethig to say!' Actually, I am downloading XuBuntu so I can start looking at Limux drivers. Its a light weight, 1.5 gig, build, but if its got a kernel it'll be enough for me! (and I suspect it has BTW ;))

Fedora Core. It's up and running quick and definitely webmin for the web interface. I've used a bunch of Linux distros and settled on Fedora. Use it for Voip, SMB, Subversion and it's smooth.

You're not looking for an actual distro - you're looking for something that functions like ClarkConnect. None of the "standard" distros are geared toward what ClarkConnect provides. Personally, I think you should go ahead and use try ClarkConnect (Linux is Linus is Linux, afterall). It looks like a professional type of thing, and appears to be well supported, and you only have to install what's in their distro to "make it go". I'm sure they came up with their own distro just so they could present a better installation experience to the user. Even though the core linux kernel is pretty much the same between distros, each distro is free to use any package manager he so chooses, and providing their code on top of their own distro smooths the road out for the user. BTW, I couldn't find anything on the site that mentioned what distro they used as a basis for their code.

Ubuntu Server and Webmin works OK. I find Webmin a bit clunky but haven't found anything better. (I haven't tried ClarkConnect so have no idea how good/bad it is.)
