Suggestions for AntiVirus?

I would suggest that you think of the following: A free antivirus would help only if you are not always on the net like a broadband connection. Suggestions for free antivirus: Mcafee (Download from AOL!!) Suggestions for paid antivirus: Kaspersky, NOD32 (doesnt clean system volume information!!) HTH

AVG Free[^] If you're a user with common sense, you can easily turn off real time scanning. Keep email scanner alive, and you'll have a computer which is as fast as it can be. Keep in mind that the free license does not cover professional usage, meaning that you can't use it at work. :(

I found that AVG was a bit of a resource hog. When you have a new Quad core machine with the best RAM money can buy and it grinds to a halt every time your system is scanned by AVG, then you know there is something wrong. At first I thought it was a problem with Visual Studio but that was only because I am always using it so it is usually the first thing to slow down. It turned out to be an IO problem. AVG was making many thousands of paging file writes and everything stopped working. I have 10,000rpm hard drives too so that wasn't the issue. The IO issue also explained the slowing down of Visual Studio. During compilation VS makes many small reads and writes to and from hard disk. It is a necessary evil but you can't get away from it. So when AVG ties up the hard drive with virtual memory paging, IO suffers for everything else. My 4 cores sit around running at about 0% and my system becomes totally unresponsive until the scan is complete. I had used AVG for a 3 years before I switched to Avast and the improvement has been noticeable.

Ah.. I've never noticed such problems, because I don't actively scan my system. I only scan what comes in.

I've been using NOD32 for over 3 years, but in the end I found out that it's not that good in catching all viruses. I got infected with 3 viruses, while updating NOD32 daily. All 3 viruses were caught by other anti-viruses (i.e. BitDefender).

[Avira](http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php<br mode=) It's for free for personal use, it doesn't hog many ressources and keeps it up-to-date daily. It also won some anti-virus testing benchmarks.

Dont use any but that also means that you'll have to restrain yourself from clicking on attachments;)

Hey Chris! good to see you buddy:).. Did you try Kaspersky?? I designed a simple trojan and for my surprise, it got caught!! It's also acting as a reliable firewall "well, nagging a lot :laugh:".. BTW: Thank you for all the good updates in the CP, we luvvvv it:cool:

I checked it out and it looks impressive. Am using Avast at the moment but it's not as reliable as the others, but a damn site less intrusive than McAfee or Symantec. Glad you like the changes - thanks mate!

Stop beeing paranoid about virus !!! The biggest viruses are the anti-virus programs !!! If you still have one on your computer, deinstall it quickly before it harms you more !!! Since 1990, I have almost never ran any antivirus program on my PCs, whether at work as a regular employee in several big or small companies or at home (never ever had one at home, where no administrator would force me to install and run one, contrary to some work places). And I can say that I never got caugth by a virus, to the contrary of several people I know, who had anti-virus software installed (for which they paid most of the time), and got infected, because they did not follow some simple rules, thinking they where protected. If you are on this forum reading this post, your are most probably a computer professional, meaning you know what an e-mail attach-document, a firewall or a router is. Keep the following simple rules : - Just dont do anything stupid like double-clicking an e-mail attachment that you do not expect, especially from someone you dont know, or, while using IE, clicking on a link in a strange email pointing to an strange web page. If you use Opera, Firefox or any alternate browser, your are less at risk (but still). - Never start a programm (an exe) you do not trust or do not know the origin. - Never open an MS Office document or PDF you do not know. - Use Foxit reader (x 10 faster) instead of Adobe-Acrobat. - If you can afford it, use Opera instead of IE + Outlook. Opera is a free browser, news reader, e-mail client, news-feeds, etc. that has it all and fast. - If you use Outlook, deactivate the e-mail preview pane (as some virus used to autorun through the outlook-email-preview-pane !). I am not sure this is still necessary, but it was at some point. An alternative is to use Opera mail client or Thunderbird, for example. - Be sure you are behind a firewall (properly configured...). If you are behind a router, the hardware router firewall will do the job (if properly configured...), meaning you can (should!) totally deactivate the windows firewall. - Be sure to enable automatic windows-updates to protect you against future threads. - Disable the Bios boot on floppy disk, CD, DVD and USB drives. This is all very easy to do and worked for me for more than 15 years. Keep in mind that even the best antivirus program is not a 100% protection, as it will know nothing about new viruses. I have had NOD32 for over 2 years and never had any problems with viruses or spyware. But it is probably a good idea to run another scanner every now and then. I just installed BitDefender and run a full scan and it found nothing. Maybe I am just lucky :) jhaga

I recommend Avira AntiVir[^] This has worked very well for me. I have used the free version, and the paid version. I highly recommend it.

I've been using Avira Antivir since 2006, without any performance trouble, and without any virus spreading in my computer... And as mentioned in the AV-Comparatives.org website, it is one of the best antivirus available (http://www.av-comparatives.org/) Free download in www.free-av.com

I personally use AVG professional, which includes Malware, Anti-Virus, E-mail Anti-Virus, Spyware, and Firewall. It can slow me to a crawl, but I found the trick was not to schedule it when I plan on working. I have it scan before I start for the day and I don't have it scan Archives except once a weekend. If it is running when I need to work, I just shutdown the scan. I do find that if I am trying to Visual Studio and do a Virus scan (though why I would do this I don't know) my system grinds to a halt and I can go get some coffee, chat with my neighbor, and watch CNN for about an hour. For the best comparision I find the AV Compartives is a good site. http://www.av-comparatives.org/[^] Saved me from keeping Microsoft "One Care" (Money? or World Dominance?) I hear that AVIRA is really good, but I like the two year license on AVG.

I use Avast too. it doesn't take much resources and very quiet...
