I just had to recommend a potential client look into purchasing Quick Books instead of employing my services because it seemed to suit is business need. I am sure a less scrupulous person could have bilked him but I have to sleep at night. Oh well. More sea in the fish or something I suppose.

 OK, serious. Isn't this the point where ethics stop being simple? You want to do the right thing for your customer, but you also want to stay in business. Ethics might even dictate you have to, because your successor might be a real asshole. The usual way out of this seems to be milking a client who doesn't really care, and try to at least break even with the rest. But the decision will rest with you. And there I see what draws people to religion: they have answers to the unanswerable things. "And the Lorth spoke though shalthsth noth bilk your client when Quicken doth the job better!" (Or "if you take more than you need, give to your church!") It doesn't really matter what the answer is - because there cannot be an answer before the fact - but just that the answer is there, and we can act. (poor Hamlet, and that's the ultimate challenge of atheism).

I don't think it's wrong to ask your peers (or even strangers), or look how others deal with similar situations. However, you are right anyway: these decisions are upon oneself. May your decisions be fruitful for both your karma and your business :)

You might not have this contract, but, perhaps the client will recommend you to others because of your scruples. Tim

In like "this guy will recommend something good for you totally free! he's amazing!"? :-D

You may have some short term pain at loss of a sale, but this potential client will always come to you first for your opinion because you applied your expertise with the client's best interest in mind. Also, anyone this client talks to will also hear a good opinion of your services. In the long run, ethical business practices pay better. Word gets around. It is a small world after all. -Kent
