      That would be illegal.

That is not a valid excuse.

This is one of the smartest things that Microsoft has ever done, and one of the most valuable contributions ever made to education. Back when I was in school, two companies - National Semiconductor and Texas Instruments - provided their electronics data books and application notes to engineering students for free. After 5 years of learning to design from their catalogs, most of us had the configuration, performance specs, and part numbers of their products committed to memory. Guess whose parts we specified for the rest of our careers once we entered the workforce? Student developers who spend 4 or 5 years learning their trade using Microsoft's tools will not readily change tools when they graduate, and MS can count on many years of loyal users specifying the latest and greatest versions for professional work. Nice work, Microsoft - I heartily approve, and would readily agree that you will have deserved the outrageous profits you'll be making on future sales to these students. :-D (attempt #12 to post this reply; ET 3.1 hrs)

Its strictly for College students. I sent that link to my son the other day as he's nearing that stage. If they are going to hook the next generation on their products IMO they should extend this offer to a younger audience. By the time they get to college they have pretty much looked and used all the available resources available and by that point made up their minds which way they are going to go! It is awful magnanimous of them though. Mike

You may have missed the part where the article said -> "By the third quarter of 2008, Microsoft will also permit access to high school students to DreamSpark." Just so you know...

This is the end, the end my friend, the end...

I did miss that, thanks for the heads up. My son will be a senior then so that will work out great for him. He's been resisting learning programming, maybe this will inspire him. Thanks, Mike

Thats a good thing to love what you do! I envy him wish I was young enough to do it myself! Everbodys gotta be somebody...might as well be happy. Mine is a very gifted child..Hes a Junior in High school talking Calculus, Physics, and requisits and has A+ cert., Word cert. and is going for 3 more Desktop tech. type certs in the next 2 months. He's a game addict and I tried to use the ploy if you want to design games you have to learn programming that motivated him for about 2 days and he said the heck with it. I haven't completely given up because he understands the benefits but will see. Mike

Thats almost frightening, my boy was always good acedemically, went through the games thing, and yeh I used the you like em you build em line as well. He did a double degree in university (neither of which was basket weaving) and ended up as a diver :sigh: Now they find it difficult to make ends meet, a lifestyle job does not make for much of the filthy lucre! Still we didn't have much when he was a kid so he doesn't have the drive to make a fortune. I almost got my guy going by building him a dive log in Access, he even maintained it for some years, never extended it like I was hoping but I guess his mind does not work that way.

Programming is not for everybody, some people just don't get it. Mine tells me its just not logical I don't understand that but I accept it and leave his fate in his hands. I figure it this way you teach em till they hit 10-11 then all you can do is hope you've done your job. When their born they don't come with instruction manuals so you just do what you can. He'll turn out all right he may not have a lot of money but as long as he's happy then he's rich! Mike
