How on earth do you remove a file association in Vista? In XP is was easy, just go to Folder options, and viola! But no, Vista got rid of that handy feature, and now I am stuck with a file association to Notepad (that was not caused by me) for this file type. I dont want the friggen file association!!! Any ideas? Do I need to go through a registry exercise?

IronScheme - 1.0 alpha 1 out nowI don't use Vista, but the following should still work on a command prompt: [remove a file association] > assoc .txt= [change a file association] > assoc .txt=textfile > ftype textfile=gvim.exe %1 %* Hope that helps. Cheers, Oliver

IronScheme - 1.0 alpha 1 out nowA neat trick that's not widely known, where-ever you see things saying reboot Windows what you can often do is kill explorer.exe in the task manager then File | New Task... and type in explorer.exe. That'll effectively reboot Windows for you without having to reboot the computer. Can have some side-effects such as tray icons disappearing but the program still running but lets you carry on working until you have the time when you can reboot properly.

I did try that :) But it seems 'assoc' did jack shit! Marc's solution did help though :)

IronScheme - 1.0 alpha 1 out nowFor future references how it operates is such: Under HKCR there's a key with the file extension,
.txtfor example. If you look at the default value for this then there's the name of another key (e.g.Notepad.TextFile)) if you navigate to this key then you'll see a structure of keys & values like:Notepad.TextFile
Command
open (default = "Open")
Shell (default = "%SYSTEMROOT\Notepad.exe %1")
another.verb
shell (default = "verb.command")Just look around and you'll quickly notice the structure, from what I remember if none of the tools work, manually editing these always works.
