Yes guys (with Apologies to everyone on the ocassion of International Apology day). My three year home machine (PII 450Mhz, 256 MB) can't do any development work anymore for .NET as everything requires NT/XP/2000 and it has Windows ME. I don't want to spend any money purchasing a new machine. The solution Linux. I installed linux. It comes with all kind of development tools and languages (and source code). I think it has better multi tasking as I can still build a project and continue to do something else in my machine. I love X-Windows as I can get any look and feel I want from it. It recognizes my CD-RW drive where as Windows fails to do so. Linux rocks! (No I am not going to say that Windows sucks)

Rama, ya havta remember one important thing here... There's a difference between a dev machine and a production server. I don't recommend Linux as a server any more than I recommend Windows. As a workstation it's great, but it does have performance and stability issues (the way it pages to swap during idle time, handles concurrent processes under heavy load, etc.). Linux will never be as stable as long as their primary focus stays on "latest and greatest." Rama Krishna wrote: I love X-Windows as I can get any look and feel I want from it. This is independent of the system. It's the same under Unix as it is Linux. Jeremy Falcon Imputek

I am talking about coding/development for fun. Career is another thing. I can't afford all windows development tools on my home machine anyomore unless I upgrade it. Plus I don't see any harm in learning a variety of things while I still can and am interested.

Did you read the post? "Under heavy load" What kind of stress is this machine under? And, I'm talking about mass production servers, not a gateway or personal server running at home or a small corporate server. Jeremy Falcon Imputek

Yep, I've heard about this. Also there was recently a problem with MySQL under heavy loads or something, where there is a bug in the IO libraries causing database corruption. Saying that linux is used most for budget web serving, which on the whole say is not going to need 99.999 reliablility. An most people don't do enterprise computing at home unless they have a beowulf cluster or something for craking peoples passwords. Err did I say craking peoples pass words :suss: . I meant to play chess against. Good I don't think anyone noticed....

Hey, since everyone seems to be talking about Linux. Can I get some ideas from from the programmer people about Lindows (the new Os)? Thanx

The idea sounds cool, but I haven't used it or studied it. So, I don't know jack about it. Jeremy Falcon Imputek
