Microsoft bought several graphics patents from SGI, some of which may be implemented in OpenGL. They (Microsoft) have now claimed intellectual property rights on ARB vertex shaders and maybe fragment shaders as well. They offered to license these patents "under reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms". Mark my words - this is going to effectively KILL OpenGL on ALL platforms. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

Sniff, I readed that too ! Microsoft want to smash OpenGL and force the use of only one 3D library our beloved DirectX ( ) , just typical from them ... Sniff ... I hope they lost ...   Cheers, Joao Vaz The loved ones never really leave us , they are always alive on our hearts and minds.

Yeah, it's been posted on slashdot and theregister, but where's the original? That's written from a third party's point of view, so it's blatantly already slanted against Microsoft. Chances are they will eventually do something like that, but there's no evidence so far - all they've done is remind people that they've got the rights. Cheers, Peter Pearson

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Why the hell did SGI sell the patents in the first place? I think it is funny. But I hope they lose too. Tim Smith I know what you're thinking punk, you're thinking did he spell check this document? Well, to tell you the truth I kinda forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this here's CodeProject, the most powerful forums in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question, Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?

This will also ripple down nto competing operating systems. If Linux doesn't have OpenGL, you may as well forget new games being targetted at that platform. No games, no gamers. No gamers, no home users. No home users, no Linux. No Linux, Microsoft wins. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

Don't even get me started with the Fahrenheit project. Those bastards at MS have strong-armed SGI for a while now. SGI is either going out or is close to going out of business, so I assume that's why they sold the patents. Jeremy Falcon Imputek

Christopher Duncan wrote: Linux is little more than a religious statement in the grand scheme of things. No. Is not ;P Linux have a rightfully and deserved place ;P Unfortunatelly the trend in Portugal is: Microsoft plataforms are for biz applications what Unix are for system applications ... So, If I want to follow up the system programmers track that I love, I'm forced to do it on unix plataforms :(( , so Linux is my learning target while doing intensive learning on multithreading and socket programming in unix :(( Many people here in Portugal are using Linux as a unix* side of learning programming and many guys have it at home, ... Now even in this small country, there are some good companies that are turning solaris, aix, hp-ux and others nix* systems in flavour of linux ... So Linux is winning ...true, in small percentages, but is winning ... Cheers, Joao Vaz The loved ones never really leave us , they are always alive on our hearts and minds.
