I configured a laptop on Dell.com - M1530 - the standard stuff: Core 2 Duo T7250 2.0 GHZ 2MB L2 Cache processor, 2GB RAM, 256 MB NVidia Dedicated Graphic Card, 200GB High Performance 7200 RPM Hard Drive, 9-Cell Li Ion battery. I get an ALMOST same configuration in Sony VAIO series' CR35: Core 2 Duo T8100 2.1 GHZ 3 MB L2 Cache processor, 2GB RAM, 128 MB ATI Dedicated Graphic Card, 200GB High Performance 7200 RPM Hard Drive, 6-Cell Li Ion battery. The Dell model costs around 55000 INR whereas the Sony costs 54000 INR. Which one should I go with?? There are other models in HP & Lenovo too but they are of lower configuration. I personally think Dell will be better, but most of the people say that Dell's service is BAD. Anyone wants to share any of their experiences with Sony & Dell!!!

Hey Not sure if this will be of any use as they may not do the exact spec you want but I got a good deal on a MESH (mine was a desktop). Something to try if you are shopping around. But out of the ones you selected I would go Sony, in my experience the screens are better, and the cases are better quality. Have a 6 year old Vaio in perfect condition, have a 3 year old Dell missing keys, CD writer doesnt work etc etc. Sony would be my choice if I had the money. Hope that helps, I am sure lots of people will share different views.

At university studying Software Engineering - if i say this line to girls i find they won't talk to me Dan

I would never buy anything from Sony, the company who brought us rootkits for DRM. They have no respect for their customers ans should be put out of business.

I'm not sure about Sony, as I agree with Rob to never buy something from a company of whom fosters root-kits. More Importantly, Dell acquired Alienware some time ago. The XPS laptop motherboard is based off of Alienware technology. The board is small enough that I hope I will never have to work on it. (Though it is really cool) The XPS 1530 has a beautiful screen. However, I usually sit in a cafe on Tuesday mornings (business meeting) I had to purchase a Privacy/Anti-Glare filter. I purchased a HD screen which happens to be glossy. Dell only offers this machine with a glossy screen, and the anti-glare filter is a must. Also, the RAM is very easy to upgrade on the 1530. Just flip it upside down, and remove one panel. If you do need technical support from Dell on this machine, just make sure to ask for their XPS department when you call. Otherwise they will transfer you around until someone finally realizes that you should be speaking with the XPS department.
