Workflow software
-
Hi. I'm looking for workflow software (not a SharePoint) that will allow the following: 1. Work with office documents. 2. If document versioning is possible it's a +. 3. Different types of workflows: a. Serial (A -> B) b. Parallel (several process can run parallel) c. Hybrid (the combination of 2 above) Can anyone point me to the right direction? Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you. Alex.

So - do you want Workflow software or Document Management? The two are often mistaken for each other, but are quite different.

I've not seen anything in your problem that states you specifically want workflow (workflow encompasses much more than document routing, but is often mistaken for it). What I've seen could be achieved by a document management system that incorporates workflow - this is different. You could roll your own with Windows Workflow, or use something like Skelta[^]. Why is Sharepoint out of the question? It's an extremely capable product.

SharePoint costs money. Share Point Services (free) do not have workflow capability. We are looking into automation processes. Purchase, vacation, etc. requests approvals. New product launches, marketing campaigns, etc. We need to have a tool that will allow us to create workflow, add needed documents to it and track progress of the workflow. Thanks,

There aren't many free workflow solutions, so you are probably going to have to pay for one (see the Skelta link) or roll your own using Windows Workflow which is free(ish) and even has a designer for it.

Thanks. What do you mean by "Windows Workflow which is free(ish) and even has a designer for it"? What do I need to have in order to built my own Workflows? I'm sorry for these ?s. I'm not so experienced with all of this. Thanks,

Basically, you need a copy of Visual Studio 2005 (or 2008). The free(ish) refers to the fact that you have to have a copy of VS to design it in. However, the Workflow designer can be embedded in other applications so you could embed it in your app with not too much work.

What's is the Workflow designer? Do I need SharePoint for this? We do have VS 2005 I believe in house. Do you have any references (links, books maybe) that I can look into? Thank you.
