Johnathan Lethem is my current favorite. -c
To explain Donald Knuth's relevance to computing is like explaining Paul's relevance to the Catholic Church. He isn't God, he isn't the Son of God, but he was sent by God to explain God to the masses.

Opps - i totally forgot about the Dune series ( thats very bad as i have all the books, the film 4 times (dvd and vhs, both covers) and all the PC games dating back to the Dune RPG. Julian May's books (well the rampart world series) are murder/mystry in a sci-fi enviroment, very good books. I've tried reading some Phillip K. Dick books before but could never get into them. After all the suggestions i think its time to take a trip to waterstones to get some new books.

Paul Watson wrote: ending which was the biggest cop-out in SF history ever I personally don't think it was a cop out. The product of millions of years of scientific study by alien races should be able to do things like that! After all it was a conscious AI singularity! Read his other Greg Mandell books. They are very good with no cop outs! Its PI* outs! * He's a Private Investigator, I know a really crap joke.... *sigh* Roger Allen Sonork 100.10016 If I had a quote, it would be a very good one.

http://www.jvf.co.ukIt's a series of adventures of three companians travelling in a plane that slices through multiple dimensions. You need three people to anchor the plane (in the same way that you need two points to define a line). At the end of each novel, one of the characters departs and the plane rotates until a new character is caught. He has had interesting places (eg Fractal Mode where the world is constructed of fractals), worlds with intelligent Horses and even a world where it's still the Cambrian period of Earth's development. Your quote just reminded me how much I enjoyed those books. Paresh Solanki "Set you're faces to stunned..."

For sci-fi: Douglas Adams (one of my favorite authors with Stefano Benni and Daniel Pennac). Also William Gibson and Philip K. Dick ("Do androids dream of electric sheep?" is even better than the movie IMHO). I like also Douglas Coupland (not sci-fi but many of his novels are related to technology) I don't like much fantasy. Out of sci-fi/fantasy, I like also Nick Hornby, Sebastien Jarisot, Carlo Lucarelli, Toni Hillerman. -- Looking for a new screen-saver? Try FOYD: http://digilander.iol.it/FOYD

My favorite was The Bridge. "You don't have to be a political scientist or a history major to see the 'bigger dick foreign policy' at work. It goes something like this: 'What?! They have bigger dicks? Bomb them!' And of course the bombs and the bullets and the rockets are all shaped like dicks. I don't understand that part of it, but it is part of the equation." -George Carlin

I agree on the ending of "The Nights Dawn" though it didn't scare me away. As Roger suggests, try the Greg Mandell books, they are quite good. I can also recommend "Fallen Dragon", but be prepared to go through some hundred rather boring start pages. I actually did put the book away for months, but then I got sick and didn't have any other reading and it appeared that the action started just a few pages from where I initially stopped!.
