If you use VS 2008 :) Dr. Dobb's offers a chance to win some bucks for modifying the Dr Dobbs game http://dobbschallenge.com/[^] Modify the game source and make it better. Win bucks. C++ Teams are allowed. What say we all join as Team CP and kick butt?

I'm going to de"n"y this challenge. This sounds like the Build a Better Burger contest, where you submit your recipe which eventually ends up in a magazine or cookbook and you get squat. In this case a bunch of people submit code and it becomes the property of Dr. Dobbs to do whatever they want with it, right? Didn't read the fine print, so I could be wrong. Maybe it's just an marketing scheme.

can they at least start us off with a game that is half-way interesting? I'd almost have to throw all that away in order to make a decent game out of it... :(

I hate Dr Dobbs.
Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++ "also I don't think "TranslateOneToTwoBillion OneHundredAndFortySevenMillion FourHundredAndEightyThreeThousand SixHundredAndFortySeven()" is a very good choice for a function name" - SpacixOne ( offering help to someone who really needed it ) ( spaces added for the benefit of people running at < 1280x1024 )

Back in the day, way back in the day, it was *the* cool source for programmers. I used to have several years worth of issues back then but I haven't looked at it since. In the old days it was full of interesting algorithms etc, hardly anyone outside of academia even uses the word algorithm any more.

I think we can make that happen. Let's 3dify it with your technologies, rather than having platforms to jump over etc it's mountains while the monsters to dodge are thousands of SCUDs flying over your heads. We can also provide the ability to jump on top of the missles to get to places faster. But then you have to time it right to jump off at a particular mountain so that you don't get splattered from the fall and of couse before it detonates.

I remember that. It was my favorite source too, then the C/C++ User's Journal, then I specialized. :-D

And change the Dr. Dobbs character to a 3D penguin. :) Note to all, not being a reader of Dr. Dobbs, I selected it as a free magazine subscription from points accumulated on a credit card - use em or loose em. I don't like it and find little useful information in it. Yes, the game is lame. Is it marketing? Um, it uses (and one of the rules says it stays) the VS icons for the game tokens for points, so I'd give that a marketing nod. Oh, and there's a link to the free trial of VS. Another nod. And you have to use VS to develop the game. A third nod. It can be a how-to for a simple game for those that have never done it before. But 3D SCUDS are in, as are explosive missiles and loud noises. :) I have an image in my head of a man riding a bomb, but can't recall what movie it's from. Anyone remember?

It's the closing scenes in Dr. Stragelove. It was also used for the opening sequence for the game Nuclear War from New World Computing. :-\ Flynn
