After having dug to a depth of 10 meters last year, Scottish scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago. Not to be outdone by the Scots, in the weeks that followed, British scientists dug to a depth of 20 meters, and shortly after, headlines in the UK newspapers read: "British archaeologists have found traces of 200 year old copper wire and have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the Scots". One week later, a redneck hillbilly in a Kentucky newsletter reported the following, “After digging as deep as 30 meters in a tobacco field near Possum Creek, Ole Zeke, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Ole Zeke has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, Kentucky had already gone wireless.”

I heard this about the Soviets finding copper wire; the Americans, optical fibres; and us Indians, nothing.

Zeppelin's law: In any Soapbox discussion involving Stan Shannon, the probability of the term "leftist" or "Marxist" appearing approaches 1 monotonically. Harris' addendum: I think you meant "monotonously". Martin's second addendum: Jeffersonian... I think that should at least get a mention.

Ach noo, I think you wouldn't mind being British, it's when they insult us by calling us English, that's the problem. On a side note, apparently the shooting internationals are interesting, no-one cares who wins as long as it's not the English. After all they are the invaders, everyone else is Celtic.

If I remember correctly, being a resident of York (UK for non-Brits), I am allowed to shoot Scotsmen if they are carrying a bow and arrow within the city walls. However, when checking on the worldwideinterweb thing the exact conditions appear confusing so I probably won't put it to the test.
I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)
