I am looking into adding a third monitor to my desktop PC. However, I only have one PCI express slot which is already taken by my current dual-monitor video card. I would have to buy a quad-monitor card to replace it but a regular one costs around $400 USD. I found this[^] in Amazon. It's a DVI video card that plugs into your computer in a USB 2.0 port. I know performance might not be great, but I only use my computer for Visual Studio, Word, Excel and so on... Rarely I watch a video, but I can use my other two monitors for that. [EDIT: I also found this[^] which is a VGA to USB adapter. It's half the price. Is the difference between digital and VGA video enough? Actually, what's the difference?] Also, I'd rather buy from Amazon than from small unknown websites. So, does anyone have any experince with something like this?

For less than the price of the converter, you could buy a PCI video card and use both your PCI-E card and the PCI card. I'm pretty sure you'd get much better performance. Cheers, Drew.

Yeah, I think that's a good idea. I had not thought about that. Will any PCI card fit? are there any chances of conflicts or something?

Give this[^] a read and check their compatibility database. That should give you all the info. you'll need. Cheers, Drew.

If you're running vista IIRC the cards all need to be able to use the same manufacturers drivers.

The triple head adapter is limited to 1280x1024 monitors. The double head one can take two 1920x1200 screens. But as far as windows is concerned you only have a single ultrawide monitor. How much of an issue this is depends on if you regularly maximize apps.

The big one is that with an LCD you avoid doing digital-analog-digital conversions. it's not a major effect but supposedly you can have some fencepost errors in the process and minor degradation. It's supposed to be more noticeable with higher res panels than low res ones.

I spent a couple hours yesterday browsing the web and found this[^] PCI card. Apparently that's the best choice based on Amazon data and customer reviews. The site you mention is quite interesting, altough there are few options in the compatibility database for Vista without being PCI Express.

Oh thanks! I am using 19" monitors with 1280x1024 resolutions for Visual Studio, Word and so on mainly. So probably it's not life-or-death for me to get DVI, right?
