Guys I've been out of the loop for a while. I recently returned home from Iraq and Korea and getting ready to saddle up to my desk in my office to re-begin my civilian life. The task I have recently received in my company is the decision and the description of my new title. The description I can write however my job covers so many different technoligies and areas that it is difficult to pick one that satisfies what I do. I work in the Litigation and Data Forensics market. I have a short list here of tasks that I am responsible for. I'm looking for some ideas that would help me choose something that fits: 1. Maintain IT infrastructure (SAN, Firewall, Switches, Tape Silo's) 2. Database Architecture, Administration, Design 3. Business Intelligence Reporting Design and Analysis 4. C#.NET & ASP.NET Development 5. Production assistance for Exchange Server, File Server, Linux, Unix, NetWare data extractions. 6. Discover, test and implement new technologies. 7. Interact with clients and vendors during many project stages. I am at a loss......LOL. No one title covers or is broad enough to describe what I do. Thanks for the help, Phil

My job duties encompass a lot of different technical jobs as well; database admin (ms sql 2K and 2K5), software developer, network admin (includes exchange, live communications server, ISA Server and active directory), web developer using .NET, and whatever else comes up. My job title, assigned by the bobs and HR is Systems Engineer. I guess that's kind of a catch all, huh?

Look up the salaries from what could fit what you're doing, and pick whichever one pays the best. I am in a very similar situation, and I just call myself "Wizard". It's not like they're ever going to pay me fairly to do all that stuff, so it only really matters what goes on my resume when I start looking for another job.

Yeah I second that. I have only been in IT for a couple of years, and will gradly admit that i know very little (face it.. who knows a lot when it comes to IT??). The other day, a guy who has worked in IT for almost 11 years asked me for help. It was in a field he knew, but wasnt his specialty.

"Bob wants a meeting of all departmental directors" brings visions of figuring out where the next annual 'conference' will be...Hawaii or Bahamas... It means you'll never be bothered again: "Go ask the Vice President Information Everything why my email won't work" which is one of a hundred daily 'requests' by our 'beloved' users "Go ask Bob why my email won't work" which means you'll never have to worry about such trivial matters because the name tag on your office is PHIL
