Well, Google has joined in with the real world and started laying[^] off staff. I feel sorry for the DoubleClick staff who have been laid off.

Well, i agree that it sucks to lose one's job. But... i have a really hard time working sympathy (for anyone besides myself) and thoughts of DoubleClick into the same thought. The company existed to advertise other people's products on other people's sites. That's what it's been known for, and if it produced anything of value on the side, well, this'll be the first i've heard of it.

You heartless swine. Don't you know that they'll have to sell the second Ferraris and the condo's in Malibu? How can you be so callous? My god - they might even have to send their children to, gulp, public school. That's horrible.

this is a really odd statement. From the Article: Google's chief executive Eric Schmidt has suggested that overseas operations, employing a further 300 people, will also be affected at a later date. so google is hiring 300 people or has hired 300 people overseas and removed 300 from united states? or is this a journalist inference on a quote that isn't being quoted? this is a really dodgy part of that article

I read it as: Overseas operations - which employ 300 people - will experience layoffs in the future.

actually, I was laughing that you even thought it might be mine. I do write poetry[^] but i am not THAT good of a writer. Oh there are some hidden and double meanings in a few of my poems and I have managed a little of constrained writing, but I am not a writer. :) I read the hobbit last about the same time, around '81 or '82. I am only a little younger than you if I recall, at least compared to some here. I was born in '65, graduated in '83 and entered the programming force in '86.

actually, I was laughing that you even thought it might be mine.

You're the same age as my little brother (who's 2" taller and 40 lbs heavier, but that's beside the point :-D). I was born in '61, graduated from college in '84, and started programming professionally in '80. I worked my way through college as a programmer / technical writer / slave.

Well, Google has joined in with the real world and started laying[^] off staff. I feel sorry for the DoubleClick staff who have been laid off.

You'd be hard pressed to find any merger that didn't result in layoffs. We're programmers - surely we understand the concept of refactoring by combining repeated functionality into a single unit.

                                        cheers, Chris Maunder

Well, i agree that it sucks to lose one's job. But... i have a really hard time working sympathy (for anyone besides myself) and thoughts of DoubleClick into the same thought. The company existed to advertise other people's products on other people's sites. That's what it's been known for, and if it produced anything of value on the side, well, this'll be the first i've heard of it.
