Microsoft and PocketPCs

Microsoft, that little known company :-D , came to our campus today and gave this really interesting talk about what's it doing in the Wireless field and all about their Pocket PCs, Smart Phones, and Tablet PCs. It was well done, and I thought that if they can do half the things they say they'll do, then damn! that's pretty cool. Anyways, they we giving away an Xbox and one of thoe nifty Pocket PCs. Everyone wrote their name of a slip of paper and we had a draw. And I won :omg: :omg: (i assume you figured that out yourself) and got to pick either the Xbox or the PocketPC (i choose the PC since we already have a PS2, and PC is cooler anyways). I've NEVER won anything like this before. I think my last prize was a Seiko wallclock 8 years ago or something. And the sad thing is that the first question I had for Microsoft guy was if I could develop apps for it. :wtf: Yeah, the curse of being a coding geek! :-D :-D So I'm in the process of downloading eMbedded VC++ and apparently if you have VS.NET you can do more funky stuff that you can with eMbVC++. That means I have to now go out and get .NET. I was hoping to stay away for as long as I could.. dammit!:mad: :-D So yay for me!:-D

Congrats, so what kind of pocketpc did you get? I just recently purchased one (iPAQ 3835) and though I haven't got around to programming it serves its function well. I don't miss appointments, honey do that stuff, and it's cool just to play with. I've got a friend who was showing off his iPaq with an expansion sleeve for a WiFi card. He said battery life while working wireless was in the range of minutes. Still - PDAs with inbuilt wireless and/or bluetooth should get over this. Even my phone can handle bluetooth for a decent period of time. cheers, Chris Maunder

If only if I could get the iPaq to activate the T39 when in automatic bluetooth mode. I can't even get the installer for 'eMbedded Visual C++ 3.0' to run without it crashing (I debug the installer and then step over the guilty code) and then tell it to not resize the registry (something it always messes up for me). The latest and greatest, 'embedded VC 4', wouldn't talk to my iPaq so I went back to old and buggy. I might try for the .NET version but I don't want to crap out my VS.NET install as I am using that for other things, so other peoples experiences would be appreciated. but it would be nice to develop in c# for the iPaq (I am hoping that i what I can do in CE.NET).

You have a T39? Then make sure you have this! You may also want to grab CodeProject theme for PocketPCs. You can never have too much CodeProject... :D I've just downloaded eVC4 since I was hoping to get it to work with my iPaq. eVC3 won't install on W2K server (though at one stage it used to - so I'm guessing a SP or something has screwed things up). I would like to be able to create games for my cell phone, but I guess you'd have to port it to it's own little ROM chip or something in order to actually play it. Who makes these little games anyway? Why couldn't they makes something more fun, like a Tetris clone or something.:(

All it came with was Solitaire (suprise, surprise!). At least give me Freecell (so much better than solitaire!). I guess I now have an idea of what kind of "app" I want to write first. :-D :-D
I don't even have Solitaire on my phone, just some silly little side-scrolling space shooter, a matching game, and this little Tron-like snake game where you slither around eating food while trying not to bite your own butt.
