I can't *wait* to see this. Everything I've seen and read makes me hope that this is going be a truly kick ass movie, along the lines of Batman Begins.

This must be a new meaning of the word "cool" which hitherto I have been unaware of.

I relax by doing 3D modelling. I tend to find that I enjoy watching the CGI stuff - especially from a point of view of guessing what applications were used and admiring the rendering. It makes watching films like Shrek a bit of a drag - I watch it and admire the grass shader that's running. Sad - but fun.

I tried 3d modelling once. It made me angry. Very angry. Yet another artistic skill I've no talent for :)

Ah - I paint, sketch and do 3D modelling as well as playing the guitar. It's a great way to relax. Hey - I look like Herman Munster's ugly brother so I've got to have some vices.

What would be a good beginner's practical introduction to 3D modelling?

Depends what you want to spend. You can get Maya (Personal Edition I believe) for free. It's excellent but a little bit complicated. Once you get your head round it though, it can't be beaten. You can also get a version of SoftImage for free - Maya and SoftImage are the top two modelling packages used by studios (with Lightwave coming in a healthy 3rd). You can get Blender for free, but it's a very complicated interface and I've found the tutorials lack a bit.

Ah, Tony Stark makes you feel, he's a cool exec with a heart of steel... Collect Iron Man comics for years and Avengers who were funded by Tony Stark. I am looking forward to this Marvel Movie.
