Okay, so the IIS is the software server that actually hosts a website on a computer, is that correct? If that's the case, theorically, you can install Windows XP/Vista on the hosting machine, instead of Windows Server 2003/2008? Theorically. So what are the key benefts do Windows Server provide you over XP/Vista? Thanks

In the license, especially now with Vista SP1, you get the same IIS7 server as Win2008 has, BUT you may not use it in a production environment.

It costs more for every utility you want to buy. You want decent backup software? $500. Do you really have enough money to buy a proper copy of Server 2003? If you do, then you must have stopped chasing girls to Iowa and back. Vista Business comes with IIS7. I'm sure you'll find that Vista is a lot cheaper than Server 2003/2008. If you want to go totally free, run Linux and use Apache.

Windows Server is optimized to be just that, a Server running on a server box. XP/Vista is designed to be a client/workstation. Some of those clients support running IIS, but others don't.

Xp/Vista have connection limits. (Think it's around 10 inbound connections. Also depends on which version of Vista you have. Think it's 5 for vista home)

Good point. I had a tough time finding AV software for my IBM xSeries servers since they're servers running Windows 2003 Enterprise and Windows 2003 Datacenter.

It's sort of like the difference between running SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005.

The most significant difference is that IIS on XP is meant for development only and is therefore limited to one website and up to 10 connections. Haven't tried Vista yet, and I won't until forced to.

It's an option for dedicated hosting. Only cost additional $20 a month for Windows 2003.

No, I was just curious and comparing Vista's IIS and Server's IIS. They are offerig either Linux or additional $20 for Windows Server 2003.
