ebay. yeah, never thought of that. but, of course there's still the chance of unknowingly getting a pirate copy there, too. such a situation. -c
To explain Donald Knuth's relevance to computing is like explaining Paul's relevance to the Catholic Church. He isn't God, he isn't the Son of God, but he was sent by God to explain God to the masses.

Legally, the EULA says you can't resell the software, so if it's not pirated, how can they tell you were not the original purchaser, otherwise, it does not matter, I'd say. Christian come on all you MS suckups, defend your sugar-daddy now. - Chris Losinger - 11/07/2002

Yeah, who I think The BSA and others are really trying to crack [pun intended] down on are the people profiting from pirating, rather than bystanders caught in the crossfire. At least that's what I hope. Regardz Colin J Davies

The license is with the CD's, as far as I am concerned, unless it is OEM, then it is with the computer it was installed on. If it was bought for him, and they gave him the CD's when he left, then it is obviously his, and I doubt that anyone would bother to ask the question, or have reason to suspect otherwise ( except for OEM stuff ). That is right, and the question being asked does not carry enough information to tell the actual situation. It can even be a volume purchase, in which case MS will ship package of set of CDs - each set is to be used independent. The CP VS.NET package is similar to this model. CP and Co. is buying package of set of CDs and shiping to each individual. Best regards, Paul. Jesus Christ is LOVE! Please tell somebody.

My "friend" got a copy of Visual Studio from the place he used to work. They had an Enterprise license, and from what "he" told me "he" was allowed to have a copy for home use. My "friend" no longer works for that company. Is it legitimate for "him" to continue using it? Or would the licensing end when employment ended? Just curious for my "friend." ;P Programming in binary is as easy as 01 10 11.
Greven wrote: Just curious for my "friend." The answer is no. The license was with "your" "friends" "company", not with "him." Even while "he" is in the employ of the "company" he should not take a copy home for home use. The only way that part works is if it is a "company" machine for use at "home" for "work" projects. And of course, now that "he" has left the "company" he has no license with Microsoft or his old "company." Oh, and go easy with the quotes. Makes me think "he" is a "she", "friend" is an "enemy" and "company" is a "terrorist organisation." regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love, and to be loved in return - Moulin Rouge Alison Pentland wrote: I now have an image of you in front of the mirror in the morning, wearing your knickers, socks and shoes trying to decided if they match!

There is no reason you cannot buy a full VC6 from ebay. M$ may say otherwise, but the point is that if you do that, you will stand up to an audit, and if you don't, you will not. Christian come on all you MS suckups, defend your sugar-daddy now. - Chris Losinger - 11/07/2002
Christian Graus wrote: There is no reason you cannot buy a full VC6 from ebay I thought the MS licensing made it impossible to even sell your license to anyone else? Don't get me started on BSA. Last year they did a huge "buy legal copies or we will come in black copters and raid your office" promotional. Tim Smith I know what you're thinking punk, you're thinking did he spell check this document? Well, to tell you the truth I kinda forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this here's CodeProject, the most powerful forums in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question, Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?

Michael P Butler wrote: I assumed with "friend" he was referring to himself. moi? Why would you think that? :) Seriously though, the software in question was from an enterprise subscription to MSDN. When it was received no one else in the building was using VC, so they gave it away and said that the person that took it could take it home. That still really doesn't make the person own it though does it... *whispers* btw, it's me :P But I do actually own my own copy of VC6 Pro, and that's really all I use from VS, so it's not to bad. I did at least already own a copy of Visual C++. Programming in binary is as easy as 01 10 11.

Yes, but the question was, how do I get VC6 when M$ only sell VC7, and if you bought a legal copy on ebay, then you would stand up to a piracy audit, even if in theory the software cannot be resold. As far as I am concerned, outside of OEM's, that is just crap and I'd be happy to buy a copy second hand.
