Xbox has two huge things going for it. 1: It's got MS's name recognition and marketing machine behind it. 2: It's MADE IN THE USA BABY~! :-D Seriously, it's about dang time that a US company got into the hardware biz. The US and Europe always have to wait months for products to be released here by Japanese companies, and in a lot of cases, games are never released here because the Japanese companies don't think the US audience would "get" the game. I seriously hope MS doesn't try to make Xbox into a set-top do-it-all-and-make-you-breakfast-too box. Game consoles should be about games, although PS2's DVD playing capability seems to have been pretty well received. (But then again, Sony already had the fabs for making DVD hardware so adding DVD playback to the PS2 probably cost them very little.) Dreamcast has shown that online gaming on consoles is coming of age (with Phantasy Star Online) so I assume Xbox will have a modem/NIC included. If MS can offer something extra (using the hard drive) then they'll be a serious competitor to the DC. But I for one don't want (and don't care) to have my console interface with, well, anything really. Not my Palm. Not my VCR. Not my fridge. ;) As for PS2 being a threat in the set-top market, I don't see that being the case. Three reasons - 1. PS2 has no hard drive. 2. Sony has no online infrastructure in place yet. 3. Even if/when Sony offers a hard drive, it's going to be a significant expense, and hardware peripherals for consoles traditionally don't sell well unless it's simple thing like a light gun or Dual Shock. --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays...

Just because the case doesn't look like an ordinary PC? The inside is still made in 'eastern asia' A US company is designing it. A US company is marketing it. The US will get it first. Doesn't matter where the parts come from. :) --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ I'm finger-lickin' good!

I've been giving the Xbox a lot of thought lately, and I'm wondering what you guys and gals are thinking about the platform. On the surface, it seems a clear business opportunity for MS. $20B in annual revenues for the segment, and MS already has a cadre of game developers writing for the PC. I'm wondering how much deeper it might go though. With handhelds and PDAs being such an important future market, it certainly must have occurred to MS that tens of millions of Nintendo gameboys shouldn't be ignored. And with all the hoopla over the set top boxes, Sony PS2's must look like a pretty big threat. Wrap that all up with .Net, and you can see how strategic it must be to have a major voice in both of these spaces, both currently defined by gaming. Anyone got predictions on a Sony PS2 emulator for the Xbox?

Sorry but can't see what is the difference from Dell, Gateway and other companies that assemple some parts (designed in US or not, made in asia for sure) and put their stamp on it. My point is that it's something new for MS , it's something new for a US Company in the Game console market, but for sure it's not the first US move in the hardware biz. Also the design it's not something new. If i am correct it will be more like a PC. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When you have so much to say it's called gratitude... \0 01234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345

Weird, I just logged on to the code project with the intention of starting an Xbox thread, and what do I find? Anyway, enough about strange coincidences. My $0.02 I think that the development of the Xbox could be the start of something even bigger. Like the evolving of the legacy PC architecture. Intel also want to move away from the existing PC architecture, and it would simplify OS driver development if support was dropped for legacy PCI AGP et al. (Not to mention the IRQ problem.) No more incompatible drivers? Microsoft are now looking at driving the hardware market, I see this as a logical extension of their PCxx compatibility initiatives. Even if the Xbox isn't the end-result, I think its design *will* influence the future hardware direction of the PC (Or whatever is equivalent to a PC in the future).;)

Personally I think that I will wait for the vapourware to materialise and then see how it performs (sales and games wise), before I start slagging off existing platforms. Even with their real/perceived weaknesses they have the big advantage of actually existing and working. Over the past few days in the lounge I have been reading a heap of 'WooHoo' Microsoft dribble that seems little more than arse kissing with no purpose, though it is a level or two lower than the Linux trash of a few weeks ago. Before I get branded as anything by anyone, a few of my thoughts that fluctuate radically depending on my mood, number of beers consumed (have done 24 x Coopers Sparkling Ale 5.8% in 3 hours 10 minutes at my 30th) and if the Microsoft OS/package I am currently using is crashing. I develop code for Windows NT, the company I work for deploys it's products on NT and Unix variants. On good days I don't even think about Bill and on bad days I may wish him dead for inflicting me with this Microsoft trash that is the bane of my existence. In the end though who cares, as many of you have said you develop with and use Microsoft software as it the dominant force in the market place and that is what your customers request. But I must say a few seem almost as religious in defence/praise of Microsoft as the Linux wheenie virus that infected the Lounge previously. Hey Michael, Hmmmm, I hope you weren't branding me personally as a Microsoft ass kisser. Although I like just about everyone I've met on the MS team and think many of their products are quite good, I'm also pretty critical when they bring something out that sucks. My question about the Xbox wasn't a plug, I'm genuinely wondering if anyone sees it as more than games machine. Maybe we have some folks visiting CP that develop for it. David

David nothing personal at all, just my pent up frustration at some of the dribble that has been espoused over the last couple of days regarding the DOJ case (isn't it dead yet) and some moronic statements regarding the Xbox here in reply to your original question. Your question elicited enough of these responses to tip me over the edge and I responded as a new thread to you instead of multiple times to the other threads. I haven't met anyone from Microsoft so I have no grounds to be directing aggression to anyone in particular and the reference to Bill is just that he is Microsoft and when in a foul mood and nothing is going right it feels better to yell expletives about a person and not a company or thing (at least I think so). To sum it up maybe Chris needs to build a "Mick's Tantrum Room" for when I go over the edge. As for the Xbox haven't even thought about it yet, the PS2 costs AU$799 RRP and with a wife and two kids that ain't in the budget. If the Xbox is the right price and does what is claimed I probably will end up buying it but I want to see it first. Michael, Hey no need to backtrack, I agree with you that there's a awfully high percentage of Microsoft adoration on CP that maybe... they should earn first :) I read a report somewhere that MS is likely to market the Xbox at $279US, at about a $125 or so loss per unit in order to build the market. Should be interesting to see how this all pans out. David

don't worry ... i read your next post so i dont take this as a flame or anything :) i just wanted to say that my comments about the xbox and ms in general are from 2 perspectives: 1). pragmatism ... no systems are perfect (even linux) and there will never be a 'better' one than the other so u take ur choice depending on where your motivations are (academic research vs. commercial development, for example) 2). one of my closest friends (and one of the best low level and 3d graphics coders on this planet IMHO) is working there and i know him well enough to know what he says is how it is hehe ... have u got one of those spill-proof keyboards? :suss: --- "every year we invent better idiot proof systems and every year they invent better idiots"
