My sons Tiger Cub pack is looking to create some kind of online calendar type thing, and guess who everyone looked at when they heard I was a programmer... So, what I need is a way to get this done with the minimum of fuss, minimum cost and as much future-proof functionality as you can shake a stick at. The most important feature is a calendar of events, but I'd also like some other things in there too, if possible:

    • Calendar of Future Events (not a history of blog posts that looks like a calendar)
    • Photo Gallery
    • Blog posting (for the Den leaders, so they can write up a few paragraphs about events)
    • User Comments, so the scouts can respond to the blog posts/photos.
    • Free hosting or online presence (like Wordpress.com)
    • Multiple users with different roles (editors, administrators etc)
    • Free

Wordpress is out, as the only Event Calendar they have is a plugin and you can't run custom plugins on the free site and I really don't want to have to deal with hosting anything... I've heard that weebly[^] might work, but the only useful thing on the front page says, "Create a website & blog", which is slightly less than useless... Does anyone know of anything like this, or am I just asking for too much for free? Any ideas? Thanks.

I believe that Yahoo can handle both of these.

Another option is Ning[^]. I'm not sure about the calendar of events, but everything else you mention is there.

What about trying out Google Apps? That seems to fit the bill for just about all of your requirements. Marc

I agree with Marc, Google Apps is great for this kind of thing. As an "educational establishment" you'd probably qualify for the bigger package than the normal free users. They've just introduced Google Sites so that you can have websites etc hosted by Google.

So you are not going to make it yourself? And you call yourself a programmer? Why don't you just let your kid do it? Programming does not consist of downloading free software and setting it up on a computer.

The Digital World. It is an amazing place in which we primitive humans interact. Our flesh made this synthetic machine. You see, we are so smart, we know a lot of stuff. We were grown from cells that came from the universe, which the matter and physics I'm typing in it is amazing how the universe is working. Human life is very amazing. How I experience this sh*t its like wow.

I didn't program it and code up the HTML. I simply said that because you said they knew you are a programmer and they all looked at you when they wanted to have their website. Why look at a programmer when you could look at a teenager with some spare time if you are just need to download something or whatever? It does not take a rocket scientists to set up a bottle rocket in the backyard.

Heh, no! I asked one of the graphic artists here to create a montage of technology things for use as banner, and that's what he came up with. I think he was a little confused about the "cheerleader" part of the site. I might get him to redo it one day and remove the girl. But since he did it on his own time and as a favor to me, I don't really want to complain too much. For a start my requirements were really vague and it is a pretty good banner - it's just that it's a little misleading!

So you are not going to make it yourself? And you call yourself a programmer? Why don't you just let your kid do it? Programming does not consist of downloading free software and setting it up on a computer.

You see, we are so smart, we know a lot of stuff. We were grown from cells that came from the universe, which the matter and physics I'm typing in it is amazing how the universe is working. Human life is very amazing. How I experience this sh*t its like wow.

I call myself a programmer, but in many cases I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so I use pre-existing tools/products. This is especially true if what I'm interested in accomplishing lies outside of my expertise. If I were faced with the same requirements as Miszou, I certainly wouldn't build it all from scratch.

So what. In the end it's about getting the job done. Sometimes that means using pre-existing solutions rather than rolling your own.

I'm not sure I understand your point. Regarding friends that look to someone because he/she is a programmer... A lot of people don't understand that programming is a lot like medicine; there are all kinds of specialties. You don't go to a foot doctor to have your eyes checked. So many people look to programmers for any kind of computer related issue. My specialty is music software. If someone wanted an application that interacted with a database to keep track of their empolyees, I'd have a hard time knowing where to start. On the other hand, if someone wanted a software based synthesizer, I'm their man. :)
