My company has some extra money, and they told me I can have whatever I want for work purposes. It can be software or hardware. They need to burn up this budget. So far what I want is Visual Studio 2008 KVM switch High end headphones Is there some other stuff I should get? I've seen stuff about Infragstics, or devexpress, and I wonder if these productivity tools will help me. What are some MUST HAVE tools that any developer needs? Thanks!

Thanks Currently, my setup is like this: I'm using a 2 workstations each with 1 dvi output, and 1 analog. Two 20 inch monitors (nice hp monitors, 1600x1200 res), and I have been switching back and forth using the monitor inputs, and I have two mice and keyboards on my desk. It's a little cluttered on here, so hence why I wanted the KVM switch. I use Visual Studio 2005 for all of my development, and thats about it. I use cygwin every now and then when I need to play with regular expressions or text processing. My boss is giving me a blank check to buy whatever else I want. There are many things I find that would come in handy, but I don't know that they exist. I am looking for anything that would enhance my productivity, and would make me more efficient or better. I'm relatively new to the coding world (about 3 years now) so I can't really think of what else to add to my wish list. I am the standalone programmer, so I come here to gain some knowledge from what everyone else finds handy.

THE must have productivity tool is VAssistX (No connection BTW). If you are doing C++ I'd also recommend: XtremeToolkit Pro (No connection - brand new customer and v. happy too) Intel VTune code profiler A good electric guitar and Line6 guitarport is a wonderful stress buster Finally if you've got real money to burn try getting a driver to pick you up and take you home from work :-)) Then you can use the brand new Sony Vaio TZ31VN to code on the road - just make sure you downgrade to XP so you can properly use the 2GB of RAM. My SO has one with a built in 3G card so also has mobile internet/email over the greater part of UK.

I find VisualAssistX[^] to be invaluable. If you are the only developer in your company, you hopefully have a good source code control system and a backed up file server to keep the scc database. If not, get one (SubVersion is a good open source solution, Vault a good commercial one). A good network file server with raid5 disk array would be a good idea for the repository.

haha, thanks I'm using C#. I do work for the government, so it's one of those end of year budget things where they have to use it or lose it. and even worse is the budget would get chopped for next year if they don't use it all up. Ideally I would rather have them hire me some help, but that makes too much sense for them to do.

I don't use source code control, but I do need to start using it. Currently what I do is just make a new copy of the files of a whole project after I release a build for my users. Thanks

Booo! I'm personally boycotting any and all MSDN subscriptions and going off the shelf after the magnificient screw over job MS did on small shop developers when they introduced the "team" systems. If you can prove you are developing for Microsoft platforms in this day and age they should be practically giving the stuff away or at least making it fairly and reasonably priced. It's much cheaper to buy what you need when you need it at the cheapest retail source you can find.

Yeah, I never cared for the team system features, the pro version has all that I need. The standard version is close to being good enough. Having the os'es around is handy, so this year I got the subscription. Hopefully it lasts 2-3 years :-).
