Yes, thank you for stating the blindingly obvious. I've know that since I was about 8.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was delieberately done by an Indian employee who still thinks that Bangladesh belongs to his country.

Actually India assisted Bangladesh in gaining her independence from Pakistan in 1971. I recommend you do your homework before expressing your opinions. /ravi

And I suggest that you read what I wrote. Nothing, got that, nothing, in my post implies, suggests, or states that India didn't try its best to hamstring Pakistan by helping Bangladesh break away. That does not mean that there are Indians who don't believe that Bangladesh should be part of India. Do you want to claim that I am wrong???

Not to give an excuse to this, but you'd be shocked to know how many people think that they're coming to Brazil when they go to Buenos Aires. Also, most people think that Brazil's capital is Rio de Janeiro (it's Brasília, btw). Geographic education in school is terrible in most countries. I was born in 1971 (so, just after the Liberation war), and I remember clearly learning that Bangladesh is in India in school. Schools are slow in changing the information they pass to their kids. After this, we often don't learn anything new. So, don't be shocked if in ten or twenty years people still make the same mistake. BTW, Brasília became Brazil's capital in 1960 (almost 10 years before), and the entire, huge city was built in 3 years, in an astonishing work of architecture and engineering. How many people know that?

I do. My uncle was one of the chief architects and he used to send me souvenirs every month or two.

Jon, your post said "...an Indian employee who still thinks that Bangladesh belongs to his country.". As a person of Indian origin who lived through that war, I can assure you that believing Bangladesh should be part of India is definitely not the feeling expressed by any Indian I know, nor by the general population. In fact, over the years India has had to deal with the surge of refugees from Bangladesh who pour into India seeking a better life. The India government recognizes this and tries to be compassionate in its efforts to stem the tide. It's a bit like saying "Americans hate rhubarb pie". Sure, there may be some who do, but this isn't a statement echoed by the majority or the mass media. So defending a statement like that by saying "I'm sure there are some Americans who hate rhubarb pie" seems pretty lame to me. I vigorously defend your right to post your opinion in the Lounge (or anywhere else for that matter); I was simply trying to correct the impression your statement conveys to me and likely others who may be unfamiliar with that political event. /ravi

Far more likely to have been a Pakistani. After all, we helped the Bongs win independence.
Cheers, Vikram.

WTF? Bangladesh was part of Pakistan from 1947 to 1971. And it only got the name Bangladesh in 1971; it was East Pakistan from 1947 onwards.
Cheers, Vikram.
