It's okay to be dumb/wrong sometimes as long as you can admit to it with good grace. It's really only the ones that will never admit that they are wrong or that claim to know everything with an absolute, undeniable certainty or are just plain anti-social morons that annoy people: it's the same in real life: there are people I communicate with on here that I wouldn't cross the street to piss on if they were on fire.

Yup, he passed me right by one day... :)

Oh I'm expecting it. I just couldn't care less, I'm genuinely interested in reading people's views. With 5mil+ members we do have a lot of said mofos attached to the different forums. Some CPians have broached the live and let live philosophy (I'm one of them, though not there completely) and as such it got me thinking on not only how as community members can we self-moderate smarter, but in the case of one of these mofos decides that they'd rather be a member of this community as opposed to a target of its scorn, how would they be re-integrated? Think about it, there are several I can name off the top of my head and no matter what they say or do right now, they're one voted by many and scorned by nearly all. It is difficult to re-integrate.

I've noticed that once you get on the CP shitlist it becomes next to impossible to redeem yourself. I'm not speaking for myself, no, I'm not on anyone's list (as far as I know). But it does seem like it is a monumental task to [re]integrate into the community. What are your views?

I just dropped 7 of them. Oh, you aren't talking about SQL Server views? Seriously, I completely agree. I've seen it myself in the past few days with Boukh, and somewhat earlier than that, with Henize.

Granted, but some have abandoned their pathetic endeavors and have tried to slip into the community. There do exist glass walls of sorts, once you've been listed it is extremely difficult to get back in. I have to say though, there are some that are definitely pariah material for now and forever and these idiot should never be allowed to reintegrate. You say it perfectly:

I still hassle Link2006 every time he posts in the lounge. That practice has been going on for about two years. I've found that you generally have to just accept the fact that a number of people are never gonna like anything you say, no matter how agnostic your statement might be. In response, you either plan to take steps to deal with it, or just ignore it. I'm not the type that "just ignores it", and think that a little anarchy goes a long way toward keeping the bozos off your back (or at least neutralized). The problem with most of the shitlist folks is that they are either too sensitive to put up a good fight, or they go way over the top in their rebuttals. Instead of targeting a select few, it's almost as if their brains implode and they're reduced to responses limited to 4-letter words, not to mention expressed in very poor Engrish. I try to keep my programming forum and article messages to a more professional level, and even the shitlist people get decent responses unless they say something completely out of bounds.

True. But what happens when they come out of rehab? Shouldn't they be "let in"? If even at a trial basis after which judgment by their betters is handed down?

I'm not regular enough to be eligible for shitlisting (that a valid term?) so couldn't really say if it's hard or not. That said, I think a few decent posts & admitting when you are wrong goes a long way to redeeming yourself. You could always try buy your way off a shitlist, and if anybody on a shitlist reads this - I'd like a Porsche thanks :)

That's what I believe too but they do face quite a few obstacles. Almost any and every posting is harassed if it doesn't devolve to a flame war.

I just dropped 7 of them. Oh, you aren't talking about SQL Server views? Seriously, I completely agree. I've seen it myself in the past few days with Boukh, and somewhat earlier than that, with Henize.

                                      Cheers, Vikram.

Yup - I couldn't agree more. More importantly, I'm not going to be a hypocrite here - I'm going to admit that I've hassled and harassed some of these people in the past, and I'm going to attempt to be a grown up about it and judge each post on it's merits (of course if the post has no merit then I'm going nuclear on their ass). Recently, we've seen Leckey and CodeFrog hassled off the boards (and not because of things they were doing on CP) - something I feel really bad about, and I feel that we are in real danger of becoming intolerant and elitist. So, I'm taking time to reflect on what a jerk I've been and would hope that others do the same. As Marc said (paraphrased heavily), it's our diversity that makes CP better than the sum of its parts. It's time we got back to the roots of CP and made people feel welcome once more.

It's okay to be dumb/wrong sometimes as long as you can admit to it with good grace. It's really only the ones that will never admit that they are wrong or that claim to know everything with an absolute, undeniable certainty or are just plain anti-social morons that annoy people: it's the same in real life: there are people I communicate with on here that I wouldn't cross the street to piss on if they were on fire.

then it's not a CP issue. and frankly, IMO, if someone keeps a public list of people they don't like, they're asking for arguments. and unless i want part of that argument, i'd ignore any such list.
