reintegration

I've noticed that once you get on the CP shitlist it becomes next to impossible to redeem yourself. I'm not speaking for myself, no, I'm not on anyone's list (as far as I know). But it does seem like it is a monumental task to [re]integrate into the community. What are your views?

I'm not regular enough to be eligible for shitlisting (that a valid term?) so couldn't really say if it's hard or not. That said, I think a few decent posts & admitting when you are wrong goes a long way to redeeming yourself. You could always try buy your way off a shitlist, and if anybody on a shitlist reads this - I'd like a Porsche thanks :)

An obvious statement :)

True. But what happens when they come out of rehab? Shouldn't they be "let in"? If even at a trial basis after which judgment by their betters is handed down?

That's what I believe too but they do face quite a few obstacles. Almost any and every posting is harassed if it doesn't devolve to a flame war.

Please don't bring that up again. It doesn't do anybody any good and will only lead to flames again.

I just dropped 7 of them. Oh, you aren't talking about SQL Server views? Seriously, I completely agree. I've seen it myself in the past few days with Boukh, and somewhat earlier than that, with Henize.

Yup - I couldn't agree more. More importantly, I'm not going to be a hypocrite here - I'm going to admit that I've hassled and harassed some of these people in the past, and I'm going to attempt to be a grown up about it and judge each post on it's merits (of course if the post has no merit then I'm going nuclear on their ass). Recently, we've seen Leckey and CodeFrog hassled off the boards (and not because of things they were doing on CP) - something I feel really bad about, and I feel that we are in real danger of becoming intolerant and elitist. So, I'm taking time to reflect on what a jerk I've been and would hope that others do the same. As Marc said (paraphrased heavily), it's our diversity that makes CP better than the sum of its parts. It's time we got back to the roots of CP and made people feel welcome once more.

It's okay to be dumb/wrong sometimes as long as you can admit to it with good grace. It's really only the ones that will never admit that they are wrong or that claim to know everything with an absolute, undeniable certainty or are just plain anti-social morons that annoy people: it's the same in real life: there are people I communicate with on here that I wouldn't cross the street to piss on if they were on fire.

then it's not a CP issue. and frankly, IMO, if someone keeps a public list of people they don't like, they're asking for arguments. and unless i want part of that argument, i'd ignore any such list.

Ah, I see what's happening here. I wasn't even thinking of a certain external list maintained by a member of CP. The list I had in mind was the mental sort.

hmm. seems to me that the only list you can know you're on is one you can read. if it's just a matter of "person A doesn't seem to like person B"... well, that's life. person B should handle it the way he/she would in real life.

Who gives a damn. If you have the conviction of your posts, and it was that conviction that pissed people off are you really prepared to change your stance just to be 'accepted'? Pah! That's for wimps and politicians.

The assumption that a person who gets on the list is motivated and capable of redemption. I've found that redemption is best left as a job for the monks. Marc

Hi, I think that when you act like an idiot, you are treated that way and I have nothing against that, it's just as real life. Integration must be an act of the one who is excluded from the communitty and starts with realising that: "When I act as an idiot, I'm treated as an idiot"

Some people just are not smart enough to leave the place for a while and let things go on without them. It's good for them, good for others, good for everyone. People on both sides treat this place like there is some extremely strict YOU ARE IN or YOU ARE OUT and there's no in between. I think I've seen John Simmons quit and leave on 3 total events. 1 was due to post quality and 2 were due to the new forums. It's good for everyone to loosen their grip and realize this place is fully anonymous, not at all like real life and just a good distraction. Take this place too seriously and suddenly you are calling people out by name, having an inquisition and for what? The very people you are calling out could be an alias for the same people you love so dearly on your "in list". Nobody knows anything. John Simmons could be Link2006 and nobody would have a clue. It would be the single greatest trick ever played but nobody would be any wiser. Me I'm pretty much outta here for a while. I like it that way. Life has gotten kind of serious at our house and we are making some tough choices. It's hard but good. We are turning a corner and making some changes. The lounge really doesn't fit in for me right now because my life has nothing to do with "lounging". It's hard, it sucks and that's that. I want to drop it all, go back to the navy finish up SQT training and go to Afghanistan because I'm just burned out on life. I cannot do that (I'd love to.) because as a father my family comes first. So I have to wade through some waste deep $(%)^ first. I hate it but I have to do the right thing, the hard thing even when I don't want to. So right now the lounge is a distraction from that. More people need to realize the lounge is just a web page, not a sense of identity.
