I understand the cheering. Really, I do. Cost me $58 to fill up the last time, and that was $0.15 a gallon ago. Whenever I hear about this though I can't help but think about the gas station themselves, though - most gas stations only make about 1 cent profit per gallon sold, so they'll have to sell an additional 100 gallons for every gallon sold at the lower price to make up what was lost. Very true, it's moreover the government doing the raping, not the actual cost. In the UK over half the cost is down to taxes. It sickens me that it costs nearly £50 to fill up my little 1.1 hatchback.

My brother-in-law owns three gas stations/minimarts. Most of his costs for selling gas are the depreciation of his pumps (about $40,000 for 3) and the charges made by banks on credit card purchases. There is, of course, some overhead attributable to the pumps as well. I'm not going to suggest that selling gas is his major profit center, but to quote him about how he handles pricing his gas: "Up like a grasshopper, down like a butterfly." In other words he tries to raise his price as fast as his supplier raises his cost, but he's much slower reducing prices when his costs drop. His gross is about $.10 @ gallon. Not nearly the margin he has when you go inside to pay, and buy a Pepsi and a Twinkie.

I just paid $2.82/gallon for 89 octane. Someone - somewhere - fat fingered the wrong price into the system at a local Valero station. 92 Octane = $3.83/gallon 89 Octane = $2.82/gallon 87 Octane = $3.69/gallon (my typical purchase)

In some places, maybe your cheap gas may not have been as cheap as you thought. If you used a debit or credit card to pay for your purchase, the company could correct the pumps mistake later and take out the difference on your card. If you happened to pay in cash then your in luck and they have no way to get the loss back. I think its a crock that they can charge you later for their mistake but I read about in the paper and the company has the right to do it.

Same here in Canada...Federal Excise, then Provincial Excise on the Federal and the gas, then Federal Sales on the whole thing, then Provincial on the whole thing...taxes on taxes.

Two summers ago, diesel was almost a dollar cheaper than gasoline. I had to keep an extra eye on my tractor for fear of someone taking it!

Well, Canadians have a valid reason to be pissed since we are the single largest supplier of oil and gas to the U.S. yet we pay close to European prices.

While the tractor is in the shop being repaired, the eye has been reassigned to watching the cows. They got out last week. A few days ago, they got into the barn and ate a whole bag of feed. I fully expected to go out and find a dead cow (or two)!

Makes perfect sense. By the time they've lowered prices to match their wholesale cost, the price has gone right back up again.

Yep. From what I've heard, many stations wouldn't stay afloat if they only sold gas. It's a big reason why so many of them build those fancy mini-marts; make alot more money that way.

Yup, it's a time honored tradition for those fairly close to the border, a weekend shopping trip, gas up etc. At least it was until the new tighter border restrictions went into affect, now it's just not worth the hassle to cross the border for anything short of life saving surgery.
