I wonder what that means '10 paid holliday' is 10 extra days on top of the 3 weeks? or are the vacation week unpaid and you have only 10 day paid? I mean can you explain what that means, I'm curious....
That means you get 3 weeks (15 days, weekend don't count) and additional 10 holidays ALL paid. The typical holidays are New Year Memorial Day (last Monday of May) Independence Day (4th of July) Labor Day (First Monday of Sep) Thanks Giving Day (Third Thursday of Nov) ( most companies give 2 days including Friday the day after) Christmas (25th of Dec) (Many Companies give either the day before or the day after) This are the typical 7-8 days, then the rest 2-3 days may come from a range of other holidays or some companies give floating holiday which means you get to pick which holiday you want to take them.

Yeah it's kinda same in India too (at least in Trivandrum). You get 2 weeks of sick/casual leave and 24 days vacation (2 days for each month worked) per year. So that's a total of 2 + 5 = 7 weeks, and then you get Muslim, Christian, and Hindu holidays totalling 10-15 days extra, + the state/national holidays (usually another 5).

I am lucky since being at the same job for twelve years I get 5 weeks annual leave + 10 days sick leave + 13 weeks long service leave + 1 weeks long service leave per year after ten years service. Seeing that I worked all hours when I was a pleb and took little time off, I have managed to accrue 28 weeks leave (140 days)...+ leave loading @ 17%

 So aside from the sick leave, you get 19 weeks off every year? That's close to 5 months! :wtf:
Cheers, Vikram.

No, you get long service leave once. Well, I never will, but some people do.

You obviosly haven't had anything to do with any Work Choice contracts have you. I only have 5 sick days a year and she wonders why I go out of my way to take each and every one of the 5.

While we get two weeks sick leave it cant really be used as holidays. Most employers will require a doctors certificate if you have a friday, monday or more than one day off sick. If an employee used all 10 days with a day here and a day there it wouldnt look good.

Just need to get Doctor's certificates each timee, nothing they can do.

I think the 3 week vacation is a standard paid vacation and the 10 days extra that's mentioned is probably for casual short** leaves you can take in case of illness or some unexpected errands you may have to run. So that's basically 5 weeks of paid leave. That's pretty good :-) ** short as in you cannot just take 10 days in succession.

Sorry mate, not in USA. There is no such thing as short time leaves. It means paid holidays like New Year, Memorial, July 4th .... I have come across only handful that give sabbatical, paternity leave and some extra paid day offs, let alone short term leave. :((

This morning I recieved an exciting job offer from an american company! I wonder how they found my profile? Anyway due to my sickness / allergy to pollution I can't take on the opportunity :sigh: (it's either in Boston or LA!!) (In fact I'm strill trying to find a place I could live well and do some programming job at the same time.. sigh... :sigh: ) Anyway, as I was perusing through the offer I came to read that: "3 weeks vacation and 10 paid holidays" I wonder what that means '10 paid holliday' is 10 extra days on top of the 3 weeks? or are the vacation week unpaid and you have only 10 day paid? I mean can you explain what that means, I'm curious....
3 weeks vacation are good for the us, it is usually 2. 10 paid holidays are standard, but many companies offer 11 or 12 (that comes on top of the vacations). And you should also have sick days (extra days to be taken when you are sick, not really vacation). So if you are not interested in this offer, why don't you share it with your little codeprojects buddies?

I started at this company as a labourer working shift work and lifting up to 15T per shift. (Actually took the job to save the money to get married) I have worked my way into my present position and now have a budget of around 20M per year and eighty staff and I get to travel (mainly to Europe and China). So it is a pretty sweet wicket. Although there have been many rounds of serious negotiation when it comes to raises, I have always acheived my goal in the end. However, I was in my late twenties when I changed career, and therefore had very clear ideas as to what I wanted to acheive. So, it seems that I already have the "mans" respect. The main thing for me is to not get too comfortable. Complacency leads to unemployment. :-D

if my understanding is right this 10 holliday are not day that the employee could decide to take whenever he wants but merely public holliday (at given date), is it?

Correct. The US usage of holiday is only Christmas/new years/etc. We never use it to refer to a week on the beach.

yep! In some countries that would seem awkward, as people would just assume they do not work on holidays. But in the US, this is part of the package a company offers.
