Graduation -> UK job search

Well I finally managed to put together the necessary credit requirements to acquire a couple of very pricey sheets of paper with my name on them that I imagine will look just fabulous in frames that will grace the wall of my office. Yes! Now the real world beckons and I can't wait to make my mark in the software world! These questions are mostly for those CPians that reside in the UK, as that's where I have my work visa. Would y'all suggest some good companies to look into? I have just under three years experience developing .NET applications for a production facility here in the states using mostly C#/ASP.NET 2.0/SQL Server 2005, with the latest trend going into developing web parts for WSS 3.0. And also what is the proper attire to wear to interviews? I've heard that most folks have success with the white button up shirt, black slacks and tie ensemble, but is that the norm? I'm making the move across the pond in the later part of June and plan on being over there for 6 months - ?? depending on the opportunities I can take advantage of. Cheers

I was born, raised, graduated uni in the UK and got my job here. Soon as I got the most expensive piece of paper I'll ever own I got my CV off to agencies and had a nice job within a month or so. That's where I am now. Demand for skills such as yours is fairly high AFAIK, especially with 3 years experience. OT: Poor Hawks, what were they thinking releasing Shaun Alexander? Not that I can talk (Dolfan)

Hey Chris, Most of the developer jobs here in the UK get advertised via recruitment agencies. The best thing I've found to do is to upload your CV ( that's what we Brit's call a resume ;) ) to job listing sites. This way, the agencies will call you if they have something suitable. I'd recommend CW Jobs[^] as a good starting points. If you've just graduated, also check out Graduate Jobs[^], that's where I found my first job. Re. interview attire: as you're a new graduate, don't worry to much about this, people understand that students are skint & scruffy - or at least they did when I left uni. The attire you've described will do fine. Though if you can, wear a suit to interviews. Have you considered locations? London has the most developer jobs in the country (it's also the best city in the world!), otherwise look at the bigger cities to have the most jobs (Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Edinburgh & Glasgow).

Thanks for the reply. Which agencies would you recommend? I going to start in Edinburgh, it's cheaper than London, but I am mobile enough to move anywhere. OT: The thing about Alexander are the concerns that arose just before he signed his big contract: age, injury and dependability. He signed the big contract and then broke himself and became inefficient, I wish him the best but I think that TJ Duckett and Julius Jones will more then pick up the slack. As to the Dolphins, what do you think about Jason Taylor considering retirement/movies career?

-Dy, Thanks for the links. I've already started looking at CW Jobs and sent in a couple applications online but no word yet. I bet that London is a great city to live in but also expensive! I'm going to start in Edinburgh and see where the road leads.

I'd suggest wearing a suit, shirt and tie and shoes. It shouldn't matter IMO. However it is definately advantageous to look clean and smart. When you get the job it is more than likely that the development department will have a more relaxed stance on dress code.

I still think he had some trade value despite injury, some teams are desperate at RB. JT? Well I'd love him to stick around at least one more season to mentor some of the young pups before he goes dancing off into the distance :laugh: Agencies, well I originally got my CV on monster.co.uk and the agencies called me at least 5 times a day requesting to add me to their list/ find me a job. In the end an agency call Henderson Scott got me the job.

That got me thinking ... I have absolutely no idea where my sheet of paper is anymore! I suppose it's not so important after 10 years :D
I'm largely language agnostic
After a while they all bug me :doh:

If you want to make a load of money, and live in London (which isnt a bad place) then try to get into banking. Even better if you know about quants and 4x and that sort of stuff. Oh yeah, suit and tie, efiinitely. Look as sharp as you can.

Tell me about it! Yet I still get asked for it whenever I apply for a job in Jordan. Its incredible. When I worked in Kuwait and the UAE they never did, M$ didn't either when they hired me at the end of my internship. I have to get a new one or find a copy.
