Google is down here (as is Gmail). For a while I was kinda wondering what to do - I mean the thought of using an alternate search website didn't even occur to me for a short while :-) Eventually I used Yahoo - only to find that Smitha had just done that too on finding Google down! Yahoo's not so bad. Though when Google's back, I am going back to Google!

    Regards, Nish

Don't know what happened - this is a first. Comcast is the ISP (Atlanta). Any other Atlanta/Comcast folks out here tonight?

I've been using AltaVista as my start page lately in an attempt to reduce my Google usage. Yahoo's start page is too tabloid, all that celebrity crap and news that you don't want to know :)

Wow - that's so early-90s! :-) I didn't even know they were still on. And yeah, far simpler UI compared to Yahoo. Search results are not great though.

Agreed, search results aren't as good but it gets you there. I DID always use AltaVista in the 90's...Google just seemed to come out of nowhere and everyone magically started using it exclusively. Anyway, Google is never going to have any real competition unless we make an effort to use other search engines...er, that's my thinking, anyway :) ...I was about to say that MSN was even worse than Yahoo but I just looked at Microsoft's new Live Search[^] ...not bad...gonna try it for a while...make Steve Ballmer happy ;)

I'm getting similar quirkiness from Google. Sometimes it comes up, sometimes it doesn't. I'm not on Comcast, but I am in north Atlanta. Do a tracert and you'll probably see a lot of timeouts along the way, as I did. There's obviously a tremor in the Force somewhere between here and there. Curiously, no one ever mentions using www.live.com[^], Microsoft's search engine. Frankly, if I hadn't written a toolbar for the club.live.com stuff I probably wouldn't know about it, either. However, just tried a search on it and performance-wise, it runs like a scalded cat. Probably because everyone else is using Google. :)

Yeah, it's not totally blacked out. It's just so slow that most of the time the pages just time out.

I actually try it once in a while. I don't like their new UI - they have this rectangular area that kinda stays in the middle of the whole screen. Kinda makes it look smaller and cramped.

Yep, that's the one. But in fairness, it was only 4 1/2 versions. I really wanted to do the fifth version because, as any World War II fighter pilot knows, 5 kills and you're an ace. :-D

I never understood the whole club.live thing. If they want to compete with Google, instead of all the games, why not just focus on creating a superior user experience?

Didn't you know? Corrosion Green is the new black. Just look at Vista's boot up - you've got the nice, soothing blue that everyone knows from research is a feel good color, and over the top of it you've got this green slime dripping down over it. I don't know what kind of medication these guys are on, but I'm sure glad it wasn't available in the 70s. :)

Yeah.. not bad.. Hope they will improve a lot soon.. Actually, my blog is "http://michaelsync.net" ... Not http://michaelsync.blogspot.com/[^] In Google result, there are some special links under my domain. :) Live search give me "http://michaelsync.net/category/syncs-gallery/[^]" instead of http://michaelsync.net[^]. seems like they don't know what the main URL is. http://michaelsync.blogspot.com and http://michaelsync.wordpress.com/ are dead old blog. but Live search has no idea which one is active or not.. However, I think Live Search is improved a lot.. I think, they used Ajax earlier and it was really suck..

 Isn't that why Kurt Cobain blew his head off with a shotgun? He's obviously the poster boy for these guys...

Well, don't be too hard on these Live developers. After all, improving the user experience isn't really their priority since Marketing says the way to draw in the masses is with online games. However, marketing stupidity and poor priorities aside, the guys who wrote the games did some nice stuff given the constraints of their requirements. They're also an absolutely insane group of developers. My kind of people. :-D
