wanna move from N CAL. seeking advise

DONE !!!! now the question is to where next. Looking for a place to move to where young families are around, jobs are plentiful , houses with 3-4 bedrooms are not 50 miles away from work and finally less than 3k a month :) what are you guys making in other parts of the US as application architects, senior software engineers and the like? Are the .NET jobs plentiful? Any advice ( mocking and not are welcome ) Could use a good laugh
You looking for contract or Perm employment? Seems to always be employment opportunities for both in Florida, but looking at your requirements I'll tell you a bit about this beautiful State. Great weather, humid, but warm almost year round. The occasional hurricane not withstanding of course (I grew up in Los Angelus so earthquakes or hurricanes). IT areas in Jacksonville, Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. All those cities have lots of family recreation and such. Housing market is great to buy, since the market tanked a year ago...HOWEVER!!! Insurance is extremely high compared to the national average, taxes in some counties are high as well. Also, auto insurance is also high. Prices of homes are variable, but in the areas mentioned you'll look at 200K minimum in outlying areas (maybe20-30 miles to downtown), lot's more closer to the cities. But, lot's of IT jobs are not directly in town anyway, so your drive might be shorter. No state income tax, sales tax runs around 7-8% depending on county. Gas running around $3.80 for regular. Contract work might get you $40-$60 an hour, just depends on where, salary around $65K and up also depending on where, and experience. Again, both could be more based on experience. I've been here close to 20+ years, retired military about 10 years ago and been in IT ever sence. Been through 3 layoff's but always found something pretty quick. Used to be real inexpensive here, but it's gotten worse, and I'm pretty sure when I retire again I'm gone as the taxes/insurance are murder (thanks to Charlie Crist and his merry band of flaming fricki....sorry, our leader) and not getting any better, as I work in the Insurance industry and I have some knowledge. Overall, it's a nice place, just research where you might want to live first...Oh, St.Johns county (Jacksonville) has a great school system. Good Luck!!

As a Florida resident I don't ever remember it being called N CAL? As far as Jacksonville having a good school district. If I lived in Jax I would send my Kids to school in Georgia. (Florida public education is a pathetic joke)

Get a nice cabin in the woods with satellite Internet, far away from the rest of the rat race. Or better yet, forget the cabin, trick out a nice camper and see the country. Marc

Reminds me of the Rockford files (you know that 70's detective show) where Rockford had a trailer on a California beach, that might be less than 3k/month and with in 50 miles of work... but that was 70's. :) Seriously though, Conway Arkansas has 2 big companies, Axciom and Verizon. Very afordable house prices. I would check them out. There is also the Veterans Administration which is 20 miles outside Conway in Little Rock. Good Luck.

It's easy to see which metroplexes have which jobs by going to dice.com. I recommend using their search-by-major-city features. With that said, Texas cities are doing well, with many industries (especially energy) hiring. And the housing prices are rock-bottom-low to boot. I would recommend you use better grammar and English in your job applications than you did in this forum post, though.

True but with the exception of Austin, it's down right boring in Texas. At least thats my opinion living in DFW where the favorite activities are eating too much and shopping.

N Cal is northern California, where the OP wants to leave.

In that case I don't think finding something to rent under 3k is very difficult. Heck I had a 6 month rental in Jax for $800.

I just read on the internet about the "Best Place to Live in the US" and it's Charlotte, NC as number 1. Right now, I think that NC has the most potential of anyplace else in the US. See the story on Yahoo!. I also live in the DFW area, been here for 25 years, and never have had a problem finding a job. Between Dallas, Ft Worth, and Arlington, as well as the surrounding suburbs, I think this is a great place to live. However, I would not recommend living in Dallas County. There are way too many idiot politicians there, the school district is an absolute mess of corruption, and the taxes are more than what you get in return. There are several outstanding school districts in the suburbs --- stay out of the cities of Ft Worth and Dallas!

phooey on armadillos. After sundown you can shoot the prowlers on your property from your porch. :-\

No 'dilloes' here. But, I do have a few wild bunnies that my dogs love to chase.

Sure, the property is cheap there. However I fear the 3 day commute might be costly ...

The jobs are good in Dallas-Fort Worth and houses are very affordable. And, there some pretty good public schools in the suburbs. But, it is a very dull place unless you enjoy dining out a lot and some of the most insanely stupid drivers in the world.
