Desktop Applications with WPF

I have been strongly considering creating a desktop/wpf version of my existing website. Are desktop applications still a good option anymore? It seems with WPF there would be all sorts of new and exciting applications coming out yet I still haven't really seen anything other than very basic samples. I know the popular thing to do lately is the ajax based web version of software and my site currently does this but I can't help thinking that the responsiveness of a web app just never feels as good as a desktop version. Perhaps it's just an old way of thinking and I'd end up just writing the app for myself but WPF really has some cool UI features that I would have thought by now would have brought back more desktop development. Any thoughts? If interested my site is in my sig and was written using asp.net and the ajax control toolkit with a SQL 2k5 backend Finally since I had to do the design, photoshop, backend, and all the coding on the site myself (Took way too long and probably should have been translated into an article here), I might look for some help with the wpf version, are there any sites other than rent a coder where I can get another developer to help out with the WPF version? http://www.myfitnessjournal.com[^] Free Online Fitness Journal

From what I see, it was worth the time and effort. Very nice site. Easy to use, navigate and well explained. Over the weekend I may even sign up. When I was training for triathalons, I used to use a training site to log all of that stuff. It was very beneficial and lately I've been thinking it might be a good idea to start it again. :) As far as a WPF application to compliment your site, consider an embedded database and allow for data to be uploaded/downloaded from your app to your site.

You could start a project on either SourceForge or CodePlex (just a thought)

Thanks, I've been leaning towards a pro edition WPF/SQL Compact edition that I would sell since the web version is free. Adsense has not even come close to paying for the hosting/database fees so (I know some think it's evil to make money of this stuff) but that is the business model I have been working towards. Ultimately I want to create a article here (would be my first) going over the process of creating the site from start to finish. Just not the whole two year story :) If you do sign up feel free to let me know what you think. Ideas, suggestions or complaints. It's amazing to me how difficult it has been just getting feedback for this thing!

There was a site years ago that let developers get together and create/sell software projects and that site would take care of the marketing aspect and award money depending on the amount of work performed by each team member. I think it was called Asyncrony or something like that but they aren't around any more. I always thought it was a cool idea

I did think about that but the model I will be using is a free website but paid WPF pro edition. I didn't think you could sell your software if you use those sites? I believe that you can charge for the binaries as long as you keep the source code open and licensed appropriately to whomever wants it. So you could theoretically use SF to host the project and code repos. But the binaries would be hosted by you? Or perhaps let SF host the binaries as well, but have the program require a registration on your (non SF) site? Now whether or not that actually makes any sense is up to you :)

You should look for some targeted advertiser.

If you want to make some cash from this - even if it's just to cover costs - I'd be tempted to go down the subscription route. So as not to alienate current users, you could offer what's there already as the basic/free package, but as you start adding features start charging for bronze, silver and gold memberships to access these features. I know this is at variance with at lot of thinking at the moment - that the service should be subsidised by advertising - but I've found that if people appreciate a service they're usually than willing to pay for it.
