One thing that really gets under my skin here at university is whenever i'm talking to someone who's doing a higher program than me, they always seem to make sure that I know how much harder their program is, and how much smarter they are. Can't a guy have a beer without someone trying to make him feel like cr@p?!?!

That happens everywhere, not just school. People want you to know they work longer hours, get less sleep, have more bills, drive farther to work, make less money, have endured more broken bones, etc.

I work routinely with very clever people, unfortunately true brilliance takes far more than academic qualifications. Some have it, some are too arrogant to realize they don't. In fact academia is a bit of a farce, it just proves your ability to learn facts, it does not by any means prepare you for a working practical environment. The most important quality is continuous self improvement!

Computer Science is one of the most difficult programs available. (It is akin to a Math Degree at a Science based university) Admittedly, back in Uni, we did make fun of the education majors and soft sciences. My favorite method of doing so was taking a class no CS major would dare take and blow the curve.

Yeah, I use to sigh up for linear algebra and topology classes just to make fun of those poor slow dolts majoring in math or physics, they were just soooo lame. I'd be all like "your family's so poor that when your momma got married your daddy had to use an abelian ring for a wedding band", or if someone got in my face I'd be all "your momma's so fat that when she sits around the möbius strip, she 'sits around' the möbius strip", yeah, un-huh. What was this thread about again? ;P :-D

Actually it's been a long time since I've been so insecure that the boasting of others made me feel anything other than sorry for them. After all, if they have to boast, it likely indicates that their ego is fragile. So have your beer and don't worry about the small stuff.

here in my lovely country Malaysia... its different... most of the high school grad took CS coz they think CS is "easy"... and they end up being a useless CS graduate... and in my batch last time... im the only one who like programming... others hate programming...

DW. If they really were that much smarter, they would be finding their programs easier, not harder. They're just trying to compensate for their feelings of inferiority/fear of failure by trying to bignote themselves.

No way, it does require a different skill set to say ... Chemistry, or Psychology, but that does not make it more difficult. I studied Computer Science because i like it and im good at it. I would hate to have spend my time at Uni writing 5000 word essays like they do in the Arts, or memorizing hundreds of formulae and proofs like they do in other Sciences. Computer Science, for me at least, was the EASY option. I would have crapped out in other faculties.

OK, maybe Im gifted (I am sitting on a HD GPA; tho I suspect I'm going to blow that next semester with the next Maths I have to do), but CS being one of the most difficult programs? OK, its definately harder core than IT (Bah, we all Laugh at IT undergrads), but lets see, its NOT B.Med and its NOT B.Law (I have good friends in both and they do a WHOLE lot more work than me)... Its not even Engineering (to which I am jumping to shortly; well combined CS/Engineering)... So really, CS isnt that diffcult... Maybe its one of the more difficult three year programs, but yeah the 4 and 5 year programs make CS look simple as p|ss! From my experience, difficult is stuff like Engineering Mechatronics, Computer or Electrical - those guys have to do a LOT more Physics and Maths than us CS/Software Engineering types! Still at the end of the day, how hard a program is, is RELATIVE! To me, Bachelor of Medicine is IMPOSSIBLE - not so much the content, but the COMMITMENT (You have to LIVE and BREATH that subject, every single day for 6-7 years)... To me B.Law is IMPOSSIBLE - I just couldn't hack all the Reading and Writing Essay after Essay... B.Math or B.Physics - FORGET IT GUYS!! BUT the reverse also holds true. The B.Law and B.Med guys look at what I'm doing and the have NO idea... to them what I am doing is Impossible (exception, one of the Maths guys, but he did combined B.Math/B.CS) To our original poster though, FORGET IT! Life is full of ppl who want to tell you they're better than you for X, Y and Z reason! most of the time, they're telling you that sh|t to massage theyre own ego... Be happy with CS (I am)... Its fun! And realistically (at least where I am) a good stepping stone to one of the B.Engineering degree's or a combined Degree (as I said above, Im about to jump to combined B.CS/Software Engineering)... Enjoy it... And do as much digital circuit design as you can - its just plain fun!
