I wonder if Microsoft has a computer manufacturer that supplies all it's computers. I'd venture to say they probably standardise on DELL. On a different note, when do you think MS will come out with a Microsoft branded computer? They already do some hardware like mice, keyboards and joysticks.

I bet that even if they do, they'd probably just make an OEM arrangement with an existing manufacturer and have them build it. I think that's what they do with the Xbox. Even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

I believe that a Microsoft branded computer would allow Microsoft to set hardware standards and to deliver flawless operation. This would mean that "mom" wouldn't have to worry about downloading drivers after upgrading Windows to a newer version. My only guess to why they haven't done this already is the fear of Anti-trust lawyers going after them, and a backlash from the computer assemblers like HP, Gateway, and DELL.

Anytime I've ever read anything from a Microsoft employee that mentioned the actual hardware brand, it was Compaq. Jason Gerard

Although it could be a different mentality. The way Apple works is to make their own computers, and support only a very limited set of hardware and get it working well. Microsot supports a ton of hardware, some it works better than others. Even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

When I worked there, everything was a little bit of this and that... Gateway, Dell, Compaq, IBM, etc... the testers obviously had tons of different types of computers... everyone else got whatever was available or in vogue. IMO, Microsoft is not coming out with a MSFT computer... other than perhaps non-desktop type stuff... TV set top boxes which they tried over and over (and failed), WebTV which they bought (and is now MSN TV), XBox which is actually a pretty cool game box (but hasn't done that great in the entire scheme of things), etc... they keep trying... but that is the thing about Microsoft... they don't give up... given time... perhaps something along those lines... but i don't see any MSFT PCs... they are not fools. Everyone I know has PS2's - don't know anyone who has an X-box (in Oz) and I don't even *hear* about the game cubes. Maybe if they, um, advertised? cheers, Chris Maunder

They were advertising them on bus shelters and on pay tv for a while. Havent seen many ads lately. It all seemed to be pre-release advertising, for both MS and Nintendo. Only Sony seem to be continually advertising. Personally I think XB is beating GC because the games are more interesting than the cutesy cartoony stuff that Nintendo are offering. Playstation is trouncing both of them, because PS2 was able to play PS1 games, and instantly got market share that way.

I've done some work with people from Microsoft in the past, and they always were allowed to buy whatever they wanted. Some people had HP, some had Dell, but many developers would build their own kick-butt systems. Just because the XBox is ahead of the GC, it doesn't mean the original statement isn't true ("but [the XBox] hasn't done that great in the entire scheme of things"). From the article (per week sales): "GameCube sales were 1370, compared to 2020 for Xbox and a whopping 9216 for PS2." I doubt its that different from other technology companies. I have two Dell's and a Toshiba in my office. The latter being a Laptop, one of the Dell's is ancient and not good for much more than a doorstop. Over the past 12 years I've had Wyse, Compaq, Gateway, IBM, Toshiba, Dell, Micron desktops. Never had an HP, although there are some around. We have standard hardware configurations from most of the major suppliers which most people order. Its the employee's preference usually. Often, when we're doing a mass order for a group, we'll just order the same machines for everyone. Certainly this is the case for build and test labs where we have racks of machines. IT support? If you don't buy one of the standard configurations, you're on your own. Most people in the product groups prefer it that way actually. We're constantly trashing our machines to test some specific install configuration, installing the latest beta of an OS. When I was in VS, I probably reformatted my main desktop twice a month (only some of the time that was because of a pre-beta version of VS...:laugh: ). To be truthfull, I almost envy you working in this area as I can imagine it's going to really boom at some stage. Although I have a vision in my head of Youthz hotting up their cars by yanking the CE out and replacing it with there own boxes to make use of all the ( gizmo || interface ) technology. One thing that I believe is essential is that the current realtime embedded stuff works as it does already and that the 'telematics' stuff is only an assistant.
