I am really looking for administration and the nitty gritty of performance tuning. Anyone been to one of the Microsoft course studies on this? Was it any good? (I went to an ASP.Net one and it was nothing but reading from the book with a bunch of drag and drops in the lab, don't think I got to much out of it except how not to do things).

Book a book or run some labs from MS Learning.

I haven not been to any of the classes. I had a friend I worked with who did the server classes which was straight from some of the Microsoft books. I just buy Microsoft books that are used for certification (maybe a 2008 server book in case you upgrade)and read online. It's worked well for me. THIS IS THE REAL LECKEY.

I actually just attended MOC 2784 Tuning & Optimizing Queries using MS SQL2005. It's pretty good, the trainer talks for like 1/2 hour and followed by 2 hour labs. Pretty hands on. (There 6 segments of that over 3 days.)

I'm currently taking the Microsoft certification courses through a local training partner. Unfortunately, because I live in a smaller city in Iowa, the vendor didn't have enough demand for live classes, so I'm taking them as self-study with pre-recorded online lectures. Frankly, I haven't been impressed with the classes - I'm learning more from just reading the books. If you can find live classes, it might be worthwhile, just for the group discussions, but otherwise, just read the books. Outside of the official Microsoft classes, I haven't found a lot of DBA-related classses. I'm planning to go to a few conferences next year instead. Ed

I've been to 2 of the SQL MCP courses in the UK, they were OK but I could have learnt most of the information from the training notes supplied. The only benefit of the training courses was a occasional paid week out in London
