      I'm sure one of the early 80s home computers didn't have any sound hardware, but some games had sound effects achieved in that way. Can't remember which though.

          I think I remember some TRS-80 games that used to send data out the cassette port in such a way that if you had the volume turned on on the datasette recorder (Computer Cassette Recorder), you could get sounds.    Some kind of ghost-ish game I remember (hunt/avoid ghosts) did that.  I specifically remember when your game was over, a skeleton came on screen in the distance and ran "toward" you, the game would make little _dit-dit-dit_ sounds for footsteps.    Peace!
