What do you do while you have nothing to do in your job?

It never happens, but if for any reason it happens, it is the calm before the storm so I tend to prepare the next jobs or to improve the classes or tools we use. In my case always there are things that can be documented, things to improve and R+D to do so...

Sometimes I dont have tasks assigned to me and I just stay sit down in my chair reading articles about programming or learning something new, because by the way Im behind a big proxy so I cant browse through the Web so free, but sometimes I feel so bored :zzz: in this situation. What do you do while you have nothing to do in your job? :confused:
I work for my own company, the only way there is nothing to do is if I make time to do nothing in which case I do yard work, hiking, biking, hot tubbing, reading sci fi novels, learning about and growing bamboo, sun bathing, walking on the beach, road trips, softball, drinking, camping etc etc etc. If I worked for a company where I regularly had nothing to do but had to sit there I would try to change the situation (as for more work or permission to leave for the day) or quit that job promptly, life is far too short to waste any of it forcibly sitting and doing nothing unless you enjoy being treated like a prisoner.

I took on paid work on the side and eventually left to do that full time.

We mainly use it for screening but we also have some timber bamboos and unique "specimen" types and some that are the exact same kind as in that movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon where they are jumping from culm to culm "Moso". The truth is somewhere in the middle. Most of my bamboos are young still so very small, the majority of them we planted this spring but my biggest one was planted last summer. It's a black bamboo and the running kind Phyllostachys Nigra. Last year it was a smallish plant about 4 feet high in it's pot, very thin stalks about half the thickness of a pencil. This spring it shot up some big culms. Bamboo usually is on a 3 year cycle described as "sleep", "creep" and "Leap", it sleeps the first year, creeps a little larger the second year and leaps into huge culms the third year. This picture was taken 9 days ago, my wife in the picture is just under 6 feet tall and that same culm in the picture as of this morning is about 7 feet tall. http://www.flickr.com/photos/23716568@N00/2546663626/[^] At a guess I think it will top out at 10 feet or so max this year but next year if all goes well next spring's new culms should get pretty close to this plant's full height in this area which is anywhere from 25 to 40 feet. A mature timber sized bamboo can grow to as high as 60 feet. The jump out of the way bit is because bamboo grows new culms every spring and they emerge from the ground as thick as they ever will be so a big timber bamboo can be 4 to 6 inches across. They grow their entire height that they ever will be in a month or two in spring. So you can get over a foot per day of growth, you can almost see them growing. I can't wait! It sounds like you did you homework before you planted. My ignorant next door neighbors planted their bamboo right against the fence between our yards. Now we have bamboo infesting our lawn, as does another of the neighbors. Neither of us are very happy.
