Apart from pitch it and buy a new one... Have you done a "pull out, blow out and reseat" of all cards and ram? ie: Pull the cards/ram out, blow/vacuum the dust out and put the cards/ram back in.

I should have speicified.. its a laptop thats only a year old. I did do that stuff for the RAM, but not the HDD. I have loaded up StorageCraft and all my files are fine, so now I am thinking it is most likely RAM. Currently I am doing a full backup onto an external HDD and will wipe it and start fresh with a different XP install CD and see if that helps. The odd thing is it boots up ok a few times, then just craps itself.. wont even go in in safe mode.

After months and months of issues and bandaid fixes, my computer laptop finally gave out. Thank goodness all my important files (like my music, etc) were backed up... Even after a fresh install, it wont boot into windows properly :( When it finally does boot in, its error after error. When I was reinstalling, it had 2 or 3 errors when trying to load the windows setup program :( I dont know what the problem is, im thinking RAM or HDD. Any ideas? [Update]So I just went to try a fresh install again with a different CD. It has frozen on "Setup is starting windows"... thats the point after it loads all of the stuff it needs for the install and then is about to say Press Enter to install, R to repair......[/Update]

I'm thinking you might want to check the cable for your harddrive. I used to build computers at uni for extra cash and spent the best part of a day trying to install windows on one with similar results before discovering that was the cause. Could save you a few pennies.

Damn it! too slow! A laptop is a different kettle of fish. can't help you there i'm afraid. A different install cd is a good idea though.

Laptop you say? This might have been pertinent information!! :-\ Before you try your next build, go into the BIOS and choose the option that sets the most stable settings for you (if it gives you the option). Then, start putting the settings back one at a time until it craps itself. I assume you did a full NTFS format before your reinstall, not just a quick format?

Load up UBCD and do tests on various hardware components. We used that at one of my previous jobs where I fixed computers. Its a great tool.

Hi all ... Now that this topic is being discussed ... I was wondering if installing multiple operating systems on a laptop is any different from installing them on a desktop pc? I mean, is there any additional difficulty or problem in it? I heard someone say so once but no other info about it ... This looks like a good place for asking ...

I cant say I have done it on a laptop, but I dont see why it would be any different to a PC. Essentially a Laptop is a small PC with a battery.

damn, Is it worth the $$? I assume you got the $3100 model? I was looking at getting either a high end Inspiron or the XPS.

Definitly... The only issue I have had was the nVidia drivers freeze at times on Vista, however (as much as I hate Vista) I must give Vista credit for the way it recovers from crashes like that. There is a downside to so much power however... Battery life. I only get about 1.5hrs off the 9cell

I cant remember the price. I got it through salary sacrifice at one of my jobs, and it only ended up costing a little over $2k :D

I went from and Inspriron 9400 to the XPS... Best change I ever made.

That's so unfair! Did you actually buy that in Oz? I'm here travelling at the moment and had to buy a laptop when I first got here. Got it in Harvey Norman in Albany (still jet-lagged I guess, didn't know any better). $1100 and less powerful than your broken one! :((

I'm running vista ultimate and windows xp professional on my one. Dead easy to set up, just shrink one partition create a new one, install your other OS on the partition and set up your boot record. I'd seriously recommend sticking EasyBCD[^] on a flashdrive first to repair your bootrecord if necessary afterward.
